Robin L. Elliott, 44, of Pulaski, PA, passed away on February 16, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born on July 26, 1971 in New Brighton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Wayne L. and Linda McDonald Wright. Robin enjoyed working on the computer and playing bingo. She will always be remembered as a good-spirited person who loved spending time with her friends and family and loved her dog, Star. Robin is survived by her sister, Carol Hoon of New Castle; aunt, Judith Mable of New Castle; companion, Brian Akins of New Castle; nieces, Courtney Hoon and Christina Jones; nephew, Robert Hoon; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and many cousins. Mildred Davis
Mildred Davis, 83, of New Castle, passed away the morning of February 18, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on July 9, 1932 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Francis and Virginia Shearer. On April 30, 1956, she married her beloved husband, Glenn C. Davis, and the two spent over 42 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on December 12, 1998. After more than 30 years of working, Mildred retired from her job as a delivery driver for Warner Photo Shop. She was a member of the Church of God. Mildred enjoyed her animals and pets, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Mildred is survived by her children, Glenn D. Davis of New Castle and Thomas E. Davis of Butler, PA; brothers, James Shearer of New Castle, Charles Shearer of Mercer, PA, Francis Shearer of New Castle, and Robert Shearer of New Castle; and sisters, Helen Knight of New Castle and Charlotte Macek of Ft. Pierce, FL. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Sarah Forkey. Beverly Grotefend
Beverly Goclano Grotefend passed away at home surrounded by family, including her husband and longtime caregiver Robert Grotefend, at 1:00PM on February 24, 2016, after a courageous struggle against the neurological disease MSA. Beverly was 66 years old. Beverly was born on September 13, 1949 in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the first child of Joseph and Viola Goclano. Beverly grew up in New Castle and worked in various roles in the real estate and finance industries. She was a beloved mother to her daughters, Erin Carlin Jackson and Brooke Carlin Napolitano, and a legendarily generous grandmother to her four grandchildren, Piper Judith Jackson, Thomas James Jackson IV, Lucas Joseph Napolitano, and Spencer Philip Napolitano, all of whom have benefited from her infinite kindness and her tireless fun loving nature. Beverly was a wonderful hostess and always had a table ready for guests, invited or expected, and otherwise. Never without a twinkle in her eye or an easy laugh, she had an encyclopedic knowledge of cinema and popular culture. Before her illness, she traveled to Italy with her husband and spent countless hours enjoying vacations with her children and grandchildren. She had a zest for life that her illness could not suppress – even after MSA had begun to take her freedom. Beverly is survived by her husband, Robert Grotefend; both of her parents, Joseph Goclano and Viola Goclano; her brother, Richard Goclano; as well as two daughters, Erin Carlin Jackson and Brooke Carlin Napolitano; and four grandchildren. Melaina J. Mills, 48, of New Castle, passed away the evening of February 23, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on June 25, 1967 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Linda Gourley Mills of New Castle and the late Thomas E. Mills Jr. Melaina had worked as a certified nursing assistant at Beaver Medical Center. A friendly, caring, and loving person, she will always be remembered for her big heart. Melaina loved her family dearly, especially her grandchildren who were the light of her life. In addition to her mother, Melaina is survived by her children, Joseph Nicholson of Longmont, CO, Ciara Latham of New Castle, and Raymond Murray III of New Castle; sisters, Michelle Davis and husband Rick of New Castle, Maria Sommerfield of New Castle, and Melinda Mills and wife Dawn of Colorado Springs, CO; and grandchildren, Annaliese, Adrianna, Ahlaina, Lierre Jr., Darryl III (Baby D), and Kahlia. John Papa
John L. Papa, Sr., 83, of West Pittsburg, passed away the morning of February 27, 2016 at Jameson Hospital. Born in West Pittsburg on August 8, 1932, John was the son of the late Lewis and Theresa Tonsetic Papa. On June 29, 1999 John was preceded in death by his loving wife of over thirty eight years, the former Janet E. Chieze who he married on July 21, 1960. John was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and with his G.I. Bill from serving his country, he graduated from Geneva College. He had worked as a sales engineer for the Crane Company/Pentex until eventually retiring from the AXE Transfer Company. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and traveling. John was also a member of the Croation Club. He will be sadly missed by all of his family and friends. He is survived by his three children, Jacqueline Girouard and her husband Leonel of Peters Township, PA, John L. Papa, Jr. and his wife Louise of Venice, FL; Douglas Papa and his wife Carleen of Wexford, PA; his brother, Ed Papa of West Pittsburg; his sister, Linda Columbus of New Castle; and six grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, John is preceded in death by his brother, Victor Papa, Sr. Honoring his wishes, there are no calling hours. Private services will be held in the chapel in Parkside Mausoleum with burial to follow in Parkside Cemetery.
Thomas Alfano
Thomas P. Alfano, 86, formerly of Hunter Lane, passed away the evening of February 29, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on August 19, 1929 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Nicola and Anna DeCarbo Alfano. Surviving is his beloved wife of over 66 years, the former Clara Domiano, whom he married on October 8, 1949. In his early years, Thomas worked at Lightning Express Trucking and was a member of the Teamsters. He later was the owner and operator of Alfano’s BP Gas Station. Most recently, he had driven the ACTS Bus. Thomas also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. A devoted member of St. Vitus Church, he belonged to the Holy Name Society and was named Man of the Year. Thomas was actively involved with the Knights of Columbus Council 512, receiving his fourth degree and serving as a past Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy, and PA State Treasurer. In addition to his wife, Thomas is survived by his children, Jerry Alfano and wife Patty of New Castle, Diane Sajewski and husband Bill of Mercer, PA, and Janice Shoup of New Castle; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Concetta (Dolly) Melcer and Angeline DiCarlo; brother, Nicholas Alfano; son-in-law, Douglas Shoup; and grandson, Andrew Sajewski. Maureen Ross
Maureen J. Ross, 72, passed away the morning of March 2, 2016 at the Overlook Medical Clinic. Born in New Castle on February 17, 1944, Maureen was the daughter of the late Emilio and Margaret Kolesar Pacelli. On April 24, 1971 she married her loving husband of over forty one years, Paul Ross. He preceded her in death on May 22, 2013. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. In her earlier years, Maureen had worked in the printing department at St. Francis Hospital. Maureen was a fan of Elvis Presley and the Pittsburgh Pirates. She enjoyed taking care of her home and taking family walks. Maureen cherished all the times she spent with her family and especially the precious moments spent with her grandchildren. She is survived by her two children, Amy Hawkins of New Castle, Aric Ross and his wife Anne Marie of Waynesboro, VA, her brothers, Robert Pacelli and his wife Maryann of Gaithersburg, MD; Gregory Pacelli and his wife Marlene of New Castle; Randy Pacelli and his wife Annie of Brunswick, OH; her sister, Judy Frank and her husband Sam of New Castle; and five grandchildren. Sadie Allay, 87, formerly of New Castle, passed away the morning of March 3, 2016 at her son’s residence in New Jersey. Born on March 10, 1928 in Safita, Syria, she was the daughter of the late Abdulrahman and Maria Mustapha Ahmed. On November 11, 1947, she married her beloved husband, Camil Allay, and the two spent over 45 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on May 3, 1993. Sadie was a loving homemaker who dedicated her life to raising her family. She was a member of the El-Fityet Allaween Syrian Association Ladies Auxiliary. She was known for baking Syrian bread and opening her home to everyone. Sadie is survived by her children, Michael Allay and wife Mona of New Castle, Julia Allay of New Castle, Joseph Allay of New Castle, Janet Molnar and husband Joseph of Sandy Lake, PA, Cynthia DuBrock and husband Calvin of State College, PA, Marilyn Allay of Hershey, PA, Alice Allay of Harriman, NY, and Jimmy Allay and wife Vicky of Cape May Court House, NJ; brothers, Ahmed and Hassan, both of Syria; sister, Ramzea of Syria; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Diane M. DeCarbo, 59, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of March 2, 2016 at her residence. Diane was born on August 30, 1956, the daughter of the late Ralph Houston and Lucy Ann (DiThomas) Houston, and was preceded in death by her brother, Ronnie Houston. She was married to her husband, Ricky, on May 23, 1981, and they remained the love of each other’s lives. She will always be his muse, his angel, the other half of his heartbeat, and his dearest love. Diane served as the Director of the Butler County Community College at Lawrence Crossing where she touched many lives and devoted her professional time in furthering the education of the people of our community. She received numerous awards and praise from her peers for her extraordinary talents and contributions. Among them were the Certificate of Professional Development and the Outstanding Service and Community Achievement Awards in 2006 and 2009. Diane’s affiliations in Lawrence County included Adult Literacy, Career, and Technical Center Advisory Board, CareerLink, Chamber of Commerce, Council of Community Services, Economic Development, Industrial Training, School to Work, Tourism, United Way, Employer Advisory Council, West Central Job Partnership, Lawrence County Leadership, and the State Regional Correction Facility Mercer Vocational Advisory Council. Diane loved the ocean, the arts, and exploring history while traveling to many of her favorite destinations. She appreciated good food, wine, and the company of others. Her smile was beautiful and engaging, and her personality was a gift to anyone who met her. She was a shining star that will always be missed and should never be forgotten. Anne M. Nestasie, 90, of Edinburg, PA, passed away the afternoon of March 6, 2016 at the Windsor House at Champion. Born on July 4, 1925 in Hillsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Vincenzo and Tressa Mecuri Tutino. On October 12, 1946, she married her beloved husband, James Nestasie, and the two spent over 68 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on October 13, 2014. Anne had worked for Rosie’s Bakery and as the Judge of Elections for the Edinburg Area. She enjoyed flower gardening. An active member of Christ the King Parish, Anne was a member of Christian Mother of the church and was involved with the Easter Bread fundraiser. Anne is survived by her children, Tressa DeMatteis and husband Richard of Hubbard, OH, Kathleen Oris and her best friend Nicholas Arena of Champion, OH, and Dominick Nestasie and wife Norma of Delmont, PA; sisters, Margaret Argiro of Edinburg, PA and Josephine Commisso of Pittsburgh, PA; sisters-in-law, Ann Cassamento of Warren, OH and Inez Tutino of New Castle; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Jennie D. Compeli, 92, formerly of Forrest Street, passed away the evening of March 6, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on June 24, 1923 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Mildred Martarella Padula. Also preceding her in death was her husband, James Compeli Sr., who passed away on February 15, 1986. Jennie had worked as a nurse’s aide for Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was a member of St. Vitus Church and belonged to the Christian Mothers. She enjoyed shopping and cooking, but Jennie’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. Joel Horlick
Joel W. Horlick, 58, of Verona, PA, passed away the afternoon of March 8, 2016 at Willow Presbyterian Senior Care in Oakmont, PA. Born on January 4, 1958 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Lawrence Horlick and Shirley Wolkoff Horlick Tegethoff. Surviving at home is his beloved wife, the former Cynthia Cialella. Joel retired as a manager of outside production scheduling for Leeds Inc. He also had worked on taxes for H&R Block. He had attended Ohio State University and was a member of the Alpha-Sigma Chapter of Kappa Sigma. He enjoyed watching the Steelers, and after retirement, he loved doing yard work and flower gardening. A sweet, dear man, Joel’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. Frank Lombardo
Frank P. (Rusty) Lombardo, 71, of N. Wayne St. passed away the afternoon of March 11, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born in New Castle on March 15, 1944, Frank was the son of Juanita Klingensmith Lombardo of New Castle and the late Albert R. Lombardo Sr. He is survived by his loving wife of over fifty years, the former Jennifer Melchiorre, who he married on June 19, 1965. Frank was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Parish. He had served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. In earlier years, Frank worked for Rockwell International and eventually retired from the New Castle Foundry where he worked as a coremaker. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a member of the St. Marquerite Society and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 315. In addition to his mother and wife, Frank is survived by his two children, Ricky A. Lombardo and Michelle M. Holland, both of New Castle, his brother, Raymond Lombardo and his wife Lynn of New Castle; and his three grandchildren, Matthew Holland, Danielle Barnhart and Mark A. Vitale. In addition to his father, Frank is preceded in death by his three brothers, Albert (Chookie) Lombardo, Jr., Jerry Lombardo and Richard Lombardo. Born on April 28, 1930 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Angelo and Mary Butchelli Rosati. Rita retired from the finishing department of Shenango Pottery. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. Rita is survived by her brother, David Rosati and his longtime companion Patty George of New Castle, and several nieces and nephews. Carl A. Fanno, 70, of New Castle, passed away the evening of March 14, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on August 29, 1945 in Ellwood City, PA, he was the son of the late Carl W. and Virginia Innocent Fanno. Carl had worked as a manager for McDonalds, and he later worked at the New Castle YMCA. He had been a reflexologist. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church. Carl earned a black belt in Aikido and enjoyed cooking. Carl is survived by his brothers, Frank Fanno in Granger, IN, Guy Fanno of New Castle, John Fanno of Ellwood City, PA; sisters, Maureen McKee of South Bend, IN and Diane Fanno of Edinboro, PA; and several nieces and nephews. Karen A. Winkle, 65, of Freedom, PA, passed away on March 17, 2016 at West Penn Hospital. Born on August 9, 1950 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Grace Ona Russo and the late Albert Russo. Surviving at home is her beloved husband of 6 years, Robert Winkle, whom she married on October 23, 2009. Karen worked as an office manager for Elcon Technologies in Pittsburgh, PA. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Monaca, PA. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Youngstown State University. Karen enjoyed playing the piano and organ, gardening, needlepoint, and antiquing. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren. Raffaele (Ralph) Pastore, 85, of New Castle, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing and Rehab Center. Born November 8, 1930 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Carmine and Angeline Palmieri Pastore. Ralph retired in 1985 as a Mill Operator for LTV Steel. He was an US Army Korean war veteran. Ralph was an expert Ham Radio operator and enjoyed music, hunting and fishing. Ralph is survived by a brother, Carmen Pastore of New Castle; a sister, Loretta Ryan of Naples FL; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Delores Pastore; daughter, Donna Pastore and a brother, George Pastore. As per his wishes, visitation and services are private. Sandra Arnold Reid, 72, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of Friday, March 18, 2016. She was born on September 10, 1943 to the late James Arnold and “Vera” Young Arnold. She married James “Jim” Robert Reid Sr. on October 3, 1964. She was a member of Salvation Army Church. She was involved with various activities in her church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They liked doing crafts, cooking, and other things together. In addition to her husband, Sandra is survived by her son, James “Jimmy” “Tree” Reid Jr. and his ex-wife Joni Reid of New Castle; daughter, Linda (Alejandro Gonzalez) Reid of New Castle; siblings, James (Ruthie) Arnold of Pulaski, PA, Susan Arnold of New Castle, Carol (Rod) Spaulding of New Castle, and Rick (Sherry) Arnold of Bessemer, PA; brother-in-law, Al Rooks; 13 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and one great-great-niece. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Johnny Arnold; sister, Sharlene Rooks; ex-daughter-in-law, Tammy Freshcorn; and great-granddaughter, Angel Carpenter. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10:00am to 11:00am at the Church of Genesis 303 North Cedar Street. Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00am at the church, co-officiated by Major Pat Beeman and Major Pat Miller. Following the service, a dinner for family and friends will be held at the church.
Will (Marty) Rodgers
Will Martin (Marty) Rodgers, 72, of New Castle, passed away the morning of March 24, 2016 at Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. Born on April 11, 1943 in Edinburg, PA, he was the son of the late Wilbur C. and Blanche E. Ketler Rodgers. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of over 50 years, the former Loretta Jean Mills, whom he married on June 26, 1965. Marty retired as an engineer for the P&LE Railroad. He also served his country for six years as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. In his earlier years, Marty enjoyed working on cars. Later in life, he loved woodworking. His greatest joy came from spending time with and teaching his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Marty is survived by his children, Cheryl Ann Rofrano and husband Louis Jr. of Spring Grove, IL and Lori Jean Szewczyk of New Castle; brother, Albert; sister, Linda; grandchildren, Jessica, Brandon, Gregory, Louis III, Dominick, and Nicholas; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his three brothers, Gene, Monroe, and Willie, and one sister, Deloris. Visitation will be held Monday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. Services will be conducted Monday at 7:00pm at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend David Bell. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Monday at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery.
