Virginia Florence Covert, 81, of N. Vine St, passed away the morning of January 9, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on July 1, 1934 in Clymer, PA, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Veda Putt Minto. On November 27, 1956, she married her beloved husband, Raymond L. Covert Sr., and the two spent over 48 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on April 22, 2005. Virginia will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Virginia is survived by her children, Veda Diane Hake, Cindy Lou Covert, Raymond Louis Covert, Jr., and Brian Lee Covert, all of New Castle; sisters, Sarah Benson, Twila Bodgan, and Barb Hartman, all of New Castle; brother, Don Minto of New Castle; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Frances Fregone
Frances M. Fregone, 93, formerly of N. Mulberry St in New Castle, passed away the morning of January 9, 2016 at the Village at Morrison Cove in Martinsburg, PA. Born on October 19, 1922 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Salvatore and Maria Mangione Anzalone. On February 2, 1946, she married her beloved husband, George A. Fregone Jr., and the two spent over 62 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on April 3, 2008. In her earlier years, Frances was a former employee of Oliver Iron and Steel Company and the Pants Factory. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Frances’ greatest joy came from doing things for others and spending time with her family. Frances is survived by her children, Roseann Fregone of Hollidaysburg, PA and George Fregone III and wife Cheryl of Windham, NH and brother, Richard Anzalone of New Castle. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Albert Anzalone, George Angelo, Joseph Angelo, Samuel Anzalone, Sam Anzalone, and Anthony Anzalone; and sisters, Mary Jane Mowry, Rose Hanes, Rita Weir, Clara Passifiume, and Baby Frances Anzalone. Anthony Micco
Anthony C. (Cactus) Micco Jr., 83, of Mohawk School Rd, passed away the evening of January 12, 2016 at his residence. Born on April 16, 1932 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Anthony Sr. and Theresa Madalone Micco. On August 30, 1974, he married his beloved wife, the former Alice E. Hilton, and the two spent over 29 wonderful years together until she preceded him in death on October 19, 2003. Anthony had worked as a heavy equipment operator for Carbon Limestone for 30 years. He also owned and operated AC Asphalt Sealers. He was a member of Christ the King Parish. Anthony enjoyed farming and also enjoyed Elvis Presley and Conway Twitty music. Anthony is survived by his children, Sherry DePietro of New Castle, Debbie Haybarger of New Castle, Tami Stafford of New Castle, Susan Sowers of Temple, TX, Tara Lambright of Bessemer, PA, Michael Micco of Edinburg, PA, Richard Micco of Edinburg, PA, David Micco of Bessemer, PA, George Searfoss of Temple, TX, and Thomas Searfoss of New Castle; brothers, Robert Micco of Bessemer, PA and Ronald Micco of New Castle; sisters, Mary Donofrio of Hillsville, PA and Bonnie Isabella of Hillsville, PA; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sandra K. Butler, 59, of E. State St. Sharon, PA., passed away the evening of January 14, 2016 at Sharon Regional Hospital. Born in New Castle on November 26, 1956, Sandra was the daughter of the late Francis and Margaret Fox Butler. Sandra cherished the times she spent surrounded by her family and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by her companion, Daniel Tukalo; her two children, Todd Butler of Sharon; Tonya Butler and her companion, Kenneth Jefferson of Cleveland, OH; her brother, Robert Butler of Masury, OH; three sisters, Jean Livermore of Sharon; Kathy Foreman of Sharpsville; Roxine Garrett of Pulaski and seven grandchildren. William Nocera
William (Willie) N. Nocera, 79, of New Castle, passed away the morning of January 17, 2016 at his residence. Born in New Castle on December 24, 1936, Willie was the son of the late Ferdinand and Anna Lambiase Nocera. Willie was a veteran of the U.S. Army National Guard. He was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Parish. Willie retired from the Youth Development Center in New Castle where he worked as a house parent. He was a fan of NASCAR and the Pittsburgh Pirates. He is survived by his children, William (Billy) Nocera and his wife Jodi of New Castle; Ann Lynne Kotfica and her husband Keith of Franklin, MA; his longtime companion, Mae Payne; brothers, Frank Nocera of CA; his twin brother, Donald Nocera and his wife Joan of Dellroy, OH; and his three grandchildren, Emma Kotfica, Brittney Nocera and Bailey Nocera. David Weir
David Lewis Weir Jr., 54, of New Castle, formerly of Johnstown, PA departed this life Saturday, January 16, 2016 of post-surgical complications at Edison Manor in New Castle. David is the son of Mary Joan Dudash Weir of New Castle (formerly of Johnstown, PA) and the late David Lewis Weir Sr. David graduated from Westmont Hilltop High School and Williamsport Area Community College. David was an avid fisherman and gardener. In addition to his mother, David is survived by and will be missed by his sisters, Karen E. Weir and husband Andre de Bardelaben of Edinburg, PA and Mary S. (Weir) Lipton and husband Andrew of Richland, WA and brother, John Paul Weir and husband Frank Theis of Pottstown, PA. He will be also dearly missed by his niece, Anna K. Lipton, nephew, Nathan D. Kenneth J. Adamo, 52, of Union Township, passed away on January 12, 2016 while on vacation in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Born on April 21, 1963 in New Castle, he was the son of Richard and Virginia Kielar Adamo. His parents survive in New Castle. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 31 years, the former Cassandra Marino, whom he married on September 22, 1984. Kenneth was the co-owner of Phoenix Building Services. He loved hunting, fishing, and spending time at the beach, and he was an avid Pittsburgh sports fan. Kenneth will always be remembered as a loving and devoted son, husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially with his grandson. Joseph Oliva, 52, of New Castle, passed away on January 19, 2016 at his residence. Born on June 4, 1963 in New Castle, he was the son of Carmela Antuono Oliva of New Castle and Alfredo Oliva of Italy. Joseph had worked as a car detailer for Nick’s Auto Body and in the maintenance department for the Lawrence County Housing Authority. He was a member of St. Vitus Church. Joseph enjoyed music and gardening, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends. Marietta L. Perrotta, 81, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of January 22, 2016 at her residence. Born on December 4, 1934 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Tony and Marie Domenick Veri. Surviving at home is her beloved husband of over 38 wonderful years, Larry N. Perrotta, whom she married on April 23, 1977. Marietta had worked as a sales clerk for Hyde Drug Store and Neisner’s Department Store. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. In her early years, Marietta enjoyed roller skating, and she also enjoyed line dancing, bowling, and visiting casinos. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Marietta is survived by her children, Larry A. Perrotta and Michael A. Perrotta, both of New Castle; sister, Rosemary Channing of New Castle; grandchildren, Anthony Perrotta and Karalyn Perrotta; and great-grandchild, Briella. Former Union Township resident Victoria J. (Dolly) DeMatteis, 83, of Vista South, passed away the afternoon of January 23, 2016 at Avalon Nursing Center. Born on February 3, 1932 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Caroline Conti Pagley. On August 11, 1956, she married her beloved husband, Mario D. DeMatteis, and the two of them spent over 56 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on September 22, 2012. In her earlier years, Dolly worked at Neisner’s Department Store. She then devoted her life to raising her family. An active member of St. Vitus Church, Dolly was the past president of the Ladies Guild, served as a Eucharistic Minister, and often volunteered for the church, especially for the Church Festival and Food Bank. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, and visiting casinos with her sister. Dolly is survived by her daughter, Carolyn Bodi and husband Frank of St. Helena Island, SC; brother, Anthony Pagley and wife Pearl of New Castle; brother-in-law, Anthony Antonelli of New Castle; grandchildren, Sara Gorman and husband Kevin and Kelly Bodi; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Viola (PeeWee) Antonelli. John Davis
John E. Davis, 66, of Sunny Ave. passed away the morning of January 24, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born in Latrobe, PA on October 18, 1949, John was the son of the late Clifford and Alberta Moore Davis. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife, the former Mary (Liz) DuBrock, whom he married on June 20, 1998. John was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and retired from the Wheatland Tube Company. He was a member of the Eagles Club and Moose Lodge No. 51. John also was an avid fan of the Oklahoma Sooners. He will be sadly missed by his family. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, Carri Donatelli of Youngstown, OH; Jason Davis and his wife Helen of Las Vegas, NV; Todd Davis of Ellwood City; his step children, Ashley Baker and Seth Baker, both of New Castle; his brother, Clifford Davis; his sister, Linda Baker, both of New Castle and four grandchildren. Mabel R. McCollums, 84, of New Castle, passed away the morning of January 25, 2016 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on October 12, 1931 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Ellen Pearson Darwin. Surviving is her beloved husband of 64 years, Walter McCollums, whom she married on April 6, 1951. In her earlier years, Mabel worked as an operator for Bell Telephone. An active member of Shenango Christian Church, she was involved in church activities. Mabel always will be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. In addition to her husband, Mabel is survived by her children, Raymond McCollums of New Castle, Dennis McCollums of Maryland, Gary McCollums of New Castle, Janet Peterson of New Castle, Karen Rahimi of Florida, and Deborah Parks of Ohio, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard Silvester
Richard P. Silvester, 58, of New Castle, passed away the evening of January 31, 2016 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born on July 24, 1957 in Ellwood City, PA, he was the son of the late Remo and Marylee Kimmel Silvester. Surviving at home is his wife, the former Pamela Tarnoci. Richard had worked as a machinist for Portersville Valve. He was a member of Savannah Methodist Church. A talented electric guitar player, he loved playing blues music and played in two bands. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his children, Patrick Silvester and wife Amanda, Stephanie Silvester, and Michael Silvester, all of New Castle; brother, Scott Silvester sisters, Robin Plavecsky, Julie Nocera, and Valli Brandenburg; and granddaughter, Madeline. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew Silvester. Honoring his wishes, there are no calling hours, and services are private.
William Miller
William T. Miller, 82, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of February 4, 2016 at Allegheny General Hospital. Born on August 4, 1933 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Theodore and Della Hennon Miller. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 61 wonderful years, the former Bernice McCoy, whom he married on November 13, 1954. William retired as a heavy equipment operator for Local 66 of Operating Engineers of Pittsburgh. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force. An avid outdoorsman, William enjoy hunting and fishing and was a lifetime member of the Shenango Hunting and Fishing Club. He also was a member of the CG’s Club. He enjoyed model trains and music, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family and friends. In addition to his wife, William is survived by his children, Paul Miller of New Castle, Alan Miller and wife Mary Jo of New Castle, and Lynn Kwolek and husband John of Ravenna, OH; grandchildren, Nicholas and Aaron Kwolek; step-grandchildren, Lindsay Tedrow and John Maas; and great-grandson, Christian Kwolek. Joan Zurasky
“Happiness is not a goal…it’s a by-product of a life well lived.” – Eleanor Roosevelt On February 6, 2016 the well-lived life of (Ruby) Joan McQuiston Zurasky came to a peaceful conclusion. Joan was born in New Castle on September 10, 1930, to Howard and Mildred Ruby McQuiston. Her childhood laid a foundation for the 85 year life story. As a child, Joan loved to read and spend time with her family and neighborhood friends. After graduating from New Castle High School in 1948, she began work at the Bell Telephone Company. Shortly after, she met Harry Zurasky, Sr., the love of her life and husband of 63+ years who survives. In the years that follow, they moved to a farm in Shenango Township, welcomed five children into the world, and then made the magnanimous decision to adopt four more children into the family proving her limitless capacity to love. Throughout Joan’s life, she was involved in church activities, planning programs, teaching Sunday School, and singing in the church choirs to name but a few. She attended Croton United Methodist Church, continued to Savannah United Methodist Church and ended at King’s Chapel United Methodist Church. Joan was an exceptional seamstress and enjoyed knitting and crocheting. She spent countless hours designing free hand original counted cross-stitch creations. The love and care she put into each creation was clearly an outward expression of the love Joan had for life and the people she met. Other interests included storytelling, cooking for her huge family, and teaching her gang how to sing. Survivors include a brother, James McQuiston and wife Nancy of New Castle and a sister, Patricia Diana and husband Richard of Louisville, KY. Surviving children include Joan Cooper and husband Richard of Blythewood, SC, Joyce Ober and husband Richard of Bowie, MD, Janice Hanna and husband Jerry of New Castle, Harry Zurasky, Jr. and wife Ann of Townville, PA, John Zurasky and wife Suzanne of Portland, OR, Christine Nelson and husband Richard of Columbia, SC, and Gary Zurasky of Portland, OR. Joan adored her 19 grandchildren and her 5 great grandchildren. Joan was preceded in death by her parents and a brother and his wife, C. William and Barbara McQuiston, a son, William Jenkins and daughter Carol Zurasky. Joan’s life will be celebrated during a Memorial Service at King’s Chapel United Methodist Church on February 20, 2016. The family will welcome guests from 10:30 until the beginning of the service at noon. Interment will take place in Parkside Cemetery. Shirley A. Chandler, 62, of New Castle, passed away the morning of February 7, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on January 22, 1954 in New Castle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Aaron L. and Catherine Hawkins Waters. Shirley had worked as the caretaker supervisor for the Robinson Development Center. A devout member of Victory Christian Center, Shirley enjoyed volunteering and helping other people. She loved cooking and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Charletta M. Waters of New Castle; brothers, Robert Waters and wife Wanda of Vandergrift, PA and Calvin Waters and wife Dacel of New Castle; sisters, Helen Askerneese and husband Harold of New Castle, Linda Carmen of New Castle, and Darlene (Cookie) Evans and husband Sheldon of Monaca, PA; grandchildren, Marquale May and Juwan Cobb; and great-grandchildren, Marquale (Froggy) May Jr., Laila May, and Jorden Nozillo. Gloria Ann Pallerino, 81, of New Castle, passed away the morning of February 9, 2016 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on April 17, 1934 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late James and Sundrina Dando Cerimele. Surviving at home is her beloved husband of 59 wonderful years, Robert Pallerino Sr., whom she married on November 17, 1956. Gloria was a member of St. Vitus Church. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed cooking and baking for family gatherings. Gloria will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved her family more than anything. Carla A. Gentsy Pezzone, 76, of Waldo St. passed away the afternoon of February 12, 2016 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on December 6, 1939, Carla was the daughter of the late Andrew, Sr. and Anne (Red) Gudyk Gentsy. On October 6, 1979, Carla married her loving and devoted husband of over thirty six years, Carmen Pezzone. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. In her earlier years, Carla was known for her performances with Chubby Checker when he was performing in our area. Carla enjoyed crafts, playing bingo and was always fun to be around. Anyone who knew her enjoyed her great sense of humor. Carla was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who cherished being surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren. Born in Ellwood City, PA on October 3, 1928, Margaret was the daughter of the late Antonio and Lucia Fiori Masuelli. She is survived by her loving husband of over sixty years Ralph L. Martone who she married on October 1, 1955. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. Margaret enjoyed cooking and sewing. She was a very creative and talented artist who loved painting. She also enjoyed listening to Italian music. In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Ralph A. Martone and his wife Denise of New Castle; Anthony Martone and his wife Robyn of New Castle; Mary Menniti and her husband John of Sewickley, PA; Joseph Martone and his wife Jessica of Austin, TX; ten grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Margaret is preceded in death by her sister, Mary Agostinelli and her brother, Joseph Masuelli. Visitation is Tuesday from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A Blessing Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11:00AM. Burial will take place at Parkside Cemetery.
Dorothy Price
Dorothy M. Price, 95, of New Castle, passed away the morning of February 13, 2016 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born on April 18, 1920 in West Middlesex, PA, she was the daughter of the late Harry V. and Delma Mayers Gibson. She also was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Willard H. Price, who passed away in October 1994. Dorothy had worked as a sales clerk for the New Castle Store, Troutman’s Department Store, and Fisher’s. She was a member of Independent Methodist Church. Dorothy will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother who loved cooking and spending time with her family. Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Barbara Wojtowicz of New Castle; brother, Howard Gibson of California; and grandchildren, Christopher Chiarini and Vikki Chiarini. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, DeWayne, Ronald, and Robert Gibson; and sisters, Joyce Myer and Arlene Stitt. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. Services will be conducted Thursday at 11:00am at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend Frederick Gilbert of Independent Methodist Church.
