Anthony A. Marino, 82, of Neshannock Township, passed away the evening of March 29, 2015 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born on March 1, 1933 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Filomeno and Rose Servedio Marino. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 48 wonderful years, the former Adeline Ludovici, whom he married April 23, 1966. After 40 years, Anthony retired from his job as an electrician for M. Marino Electric Company. He was also a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 712. He previously served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Anthony was a member of St. Vitus Church. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Anthony is survived by his children, Stephen Marino and wife Michelle of Yorktown, VA, Lori Gebhard and husband Michael of Glenn Allen, VA, and Roseann Liberatore and husband Michael of Virginia Beach, VA; brother, J. John Marino of New Castle; and nine grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Michael Marino. Samuel Froella
Samuel F. Froella, 95, of West Pittsburg, PA, passed away the afternoon of March 30, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on October 8, 1919 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Samuel and Antoinette Varvetta Froella. Samuel retired from his job as a lineman and repairman for Western Electric. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War. He enjoyed working outside and woodworking. Samuel is survived by his children, Lucy Beech and husband Mike of Franklin, PA, Charles Froella and wife Tommylene of Lebanon, IN, Sharon Froella of Morristown, IN, and Sandra Oldham and husband Mike of Indianapolis, IN; sisters, Mary Ann Domenic of New Castle and Barbara Burns of Washington; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Angelo “Fuzzy” Froella, Jerry Ferilla, and Domenic Farella. William A. Zocolo, Jr., 71, of New Castle, passed away the morning of April 1, 2015 at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center in Columbiana, OH. Born on November 17, 1943 in Washingtonville, OH, he was the son of Shirley June Corl Zocolo of East Palestine, OH and the late William (Bud) Zocolo, Sr. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of over 19 years, the former Mary Ann Breeze, whom he married on March 9, 1996. William retired from his job as a manager for Hickey Metal Fabrication of Salem, OH in 2010. He previously attended Columbus Business College. William was a member of Christ the King Parish. He enjoyed rebuilding cars, carpentry, and hunting. A nature enthusiast, William was known for his love of animals. In addition to his wife and mother, William is survived by his children, Michael Zocolo and wife Doreen of Leetonia, OH, Mark Zocolo and wife Wendy of East Palestine, OH, and Lisa Johnson and husband Chris of Port St. Lucy, FL; brothers, Terry Zocolo and wife Patty of East Palestine, OH and Mark Zocolo and wife Lynn of Leetonia, OH; sister, Atty. Elizabeth Zurasky
Elizabeth A. Zurasky, 84, of Shenango Township, passed away the morning of March 28, 2015 at her daughter’s residence. She was born in New Castle on November 14, 1930, a daughter of the late Nicholas A. and Bernardine Bartberger Ferry. Preceding her in death on July 26, 1986, is her husband, John Zurasky. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph The Worker Church. Elizabeth is survived by her two children, Janet (William) Shuber of New Castle; John (Nancy) Zurasky of Merritt Island, FL; her sisters, Eleanor Vannatten of New Castle; Jane (Russell) List of Bradenton, FL. and two grandchildren. Burial will take place in St. Joseph Cemetery. There are no calling hours planned. A Memorial Mass will be held at a later date at St. Joseph The Worker Church.
Daniel Van Fossan
Daniel J. Van Fossan, 70, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2015 after an extended illness. He was born November 4, 1944 in New Castle, PA, a son of the late Keith and Margaret Thornton Van Fossan. He graduated from New Castle High School in 1963 and owned and operated Dan’s Poultry in New Castle for over twenty years. He later worked at the Valley View Antique Mall in Brookfield, OH. Dan is survived by his son, Daniel S. Van Fossan and his wife Jeanine of Cranberry Township, PA. Also surviving is his longtime devoted companion, Debbie Esenwein and her family, a son, Donald and his wife Jill, and her daughter, JoAnn. Dan enjoyed vacationing with his family and traveling to California to visit his sister. He also enjoyed looking for antiques, going to casinos, political news, watching sports, and attending Pittsburgh Pirates games. His greatest pleasure was spending time with his five grandchildren, Spencer, Ava, Raegen, Brock and his little buddy, Cole, especially attending their sports activities. Dan was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, William Van Fossan and Samuel Van Fossan, and his sister, Patricia Hamill. A private service will be held at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. Burial will take place in Oak Park Cemetery.
Helen Massaro
Helen E. Massaro, of New Castle, passed away the morning of April 6, 2015 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Luigi and Dominica Gaspare Fabian. On January 11, 1937, she married her beloved husband, Patsy J. Massaro, and the two spent over 69 years together until he preceded her in death on December 21, 2006. For 25 years, Helen worked for the Circulation Department for the New Castle News. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. Helen belonged to Silver Sneakers at the YMCA, the Eagles Ladies Auxiliary, Third United Presbyterian Church Activities Club, and CG’s Club. She was also a Red Cross volunteer. Helen enjoyed dancing, antiquing, shopping, going to plays and movies, and eating out at restaurants. Helen is survived by her children, Jacqueline Cavell of East Lake, OH, Linda Massaro, and Patrick Massaro and wife Robin, all of New Castle; grandchildren, Larissa Rogan and husband Travis, Haylee Massaro, and Taylor Massaro; and great-grandchildren, Travis and Mason Rogan. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Fred and Marion Fabian, and sisters, Rose DeFonso, Mary Barilla, and Edith Faella. Ronnie Jones
Ronnie R. Jones, 62, of New Castle, passed away the evening of April 30, 2015 at his residence. Born on July 24, 1952 in New Albany, IN, he was the son of the late Charles E. and Avis Blankenship Jones. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of over 37 years, the former Laurie Sealock, whom he married on July 30, 1977. Earning a Master’s degree in English Literature from Indiana University Bloomington, Ron taught English in Bellevue, OH. He then worked for Fisher’s Big Wheel for 11 years, moving up the ranks from manager trainee to managing a store in Imlay City, MI. He then advanced to the buying office at the company corporate office in New Castle, PA. Ronnie most recently worked as a salesperson for Zee Medical Supplies. He earned the highest honor of the Boy Scouts of America, achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. Though he enjoyed fishing, Ronnie’s greatest joy came from spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Ronnie is survived by his sons, Alexander W. Jones and girlfriend Ashley Santisi of Hubbard, OH and Ben Jones of New Castle, and grandchildren, Savannah, Brayden, and Camden. Sharon L. Hendricks, 68, of New Castle, passed away the evening of April 28, 2015 at Transitions Healthcare in Washington, PA. Born on September 11, 1946 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late George R. and Martha McCue Brown. She also was preceded in death by her husband of ten years, Terry Hendricks, who passed away in September 1999. Sharon was an avid Steelers fan, and she enjoyed crocheting. Sharon is survived by her daughters, Teresa Anderson of New York, Laura Quear of New Castle, Rose Edwards of Gainesville, OH, and Patricia Kulinski of New Castle; brother, Robert Brown of Texas; sisters, Carol Van Stienburg of Texas and Martha Chappell of New Castle; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brother, George “Larry” Brown, and her first husband, Ronald Kulinski. Joseph Lamb
Joseph A. Lamb, Jr., 82, of New Castle, passed away the evening of April 26, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on January 14, 1933 in Williamsport, PA, he was the son of the late Joseph Sr. and Cora Lamb. On July 10, 1961, he married his beloved wife, the former Shirley A. Nativio, and the two spent over 50 wonderful years together until she preceded him in death on January 29, 2012. After 33 years of working, Joseph retired from Conrail Railroad. He was a member of Independent Methodist Church. He also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 455 and American Legion Post 343. He enjoyed going to flea markets. Joseph is survived by his sons, Jeffery Lamb and Joseph Lamb and wife Andrea, all of New Castle; sister, Mildred (Midge) and Jack Payne of Austintown, OH; and grandchildren, Justin Lamb, Lauren Brunke, Jessica Lamb, David Lamb, Jeffrey Lamb, and Ryan Lamb. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his brothers, David and Jimmy Lamb. Honoring his wishes, there are no calling hours. Ruth Pascarella
Ruth Pascarella, 79, of New Castle, passed away the morning of April 24, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on March 26, 1936 in Ellwood City, PA, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Theresa Paglia Perry. On November 26, 1955, she married her beloved husband, Joseph C. Pascarella, and the two spent over 48 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on November 18, 2004. Ruth worked in child care for the New Castle YMCA. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School. A member of St. Vitus Church, she enjoyed Bible Study. Ruth was known as a creative and talented artist who loved painting with watercolors. She will always be remembered as a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. Ruth is survived by her children, Terry Lynn Cook and husband Mitch of Ford City, PA, Maria Elaina McKee of New Castle, and Joseph L. Pascarella and wife Melissa of New Castle; and grandchildren, Tasha Sniezek and husband Larry, Alyssa Cook, Michael Cook, and Alaina Pascarella. Anita Swogger
Anita L. Swogger, 78, of Union Township, passed away the morning of April 20, 2015 at Jameson Care Center. Born on February 22, 1937 in New Castle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Andrew “Chuck” and Frances Mingione Russo. Surviving at home is her beloved husband of 58 years, Lowell T. Swogger, whom she married on September 1, 1956. Passionate about cooking, Anita worked at different cafeterias and restaurants in the city and also helped with catering events. She was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church. Anita enjoyed bingo, playing cards, and visiting casinos. In her earlier years, she played and coached softball. An avid Pittsburgh sports fan, Anita loved watching the Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins. Anita’s greatest joy came from cooking Sunday and holiday dinners and spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, Anita is survived by her children, Thomas Swogger and wife Cyndi of New Castle, William Swogger and partner Ron Arnold of Pittsburgh, and Steven Swogger and wife Michelle of New Castle; sister, Madeline Fiorante of New Castle; and grandchildren, Thomas Jr., Brandon, Benjamin, and Matthew. Lena C. DeSalvo, 97, of New Castle, passed away the morning of April 19, 2015 in Lawrence County Geri-Care. Born on August 23, 1917 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Stella DiGregorio Padula. She was preceded in death in 1994 by her beloved husband of 53 years, David E. DeSalvo. Lena retired from her job as a secretary for Laurel School District. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. Lena also belonged to the Busy Dozens, New Castle Women’s Club, National Secretaries Association, her Garden Club, Eastbrook Grange, and Laurel Retirees Group. Lena is survived by her son, David L. DeSalvo and wife Lorraine of New Castle; brother, Nicholas Padula of New Castle; sisters, Angelina Ross of Florida and Lucy Tranquillo of New Castle; grandchildren, Jodi Marino and husband Daniel and Jeffery DeSalvo and wife Tina; and great-grandchildren, Molly, Sophie, Emily, and James. Harold Eaton
Harold J. Eaton, Jr., 64, of Wampum, PA passed away the evening of April 18, 2015. Born in New Brighton, Pa. on September 26, 1950, Harold was the son of the late Harold J., Sr. and Blanche Reese Eaton. Harold had worked for the Eaton Electric Corporation for over forty years. He enjoyed gardening. Harold had a passion for wood working and enjoyed working in his wood shop. Harold is survived by his companion, Chloe Buckner of New Castle, and her children, James, Debbie and Scott, his sister, Debbie Leonard and her husband Ken of Aliquippa, PA; and several nieces and nephews. Barbara Bartell
Barbara L. Bartell, 80, of Avalon Drive, Union Township passed away the morning of April 17, 2015 at her residence. Born on August 28, 1934 in Greenville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Erma Emmett McCune. On October 29, 1954, she married her beloved husband, Daniel W. Bartell, and the two spent over 55 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on June 3, 2010. Barbara served her country as a member of the U.S. Navy. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church. Barbara is survived by her children, Daniel W. Bartell of Woodstock, GA, Reverend Steven D. Bartell of Exeter, NH, Timothy A. Bartell of Monroe, CT, and Lisa R. Crasilli of New Castle; brother, David McCune of Virginia; sister, Sally Michael of New Castle; ten grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mary Cooper
Mary A. Cooper, 93, of New Castle passed away the evening of April 16, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on February 10, 1922 in Hillsville, PA, she was the daughter of the late Nicolo and Mary Josephine Capezzuto Masinando. On September 28, 1946, she married her beloved husband, Joseph V. Cooper, and the two spent over 46 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on December 25, 1992. In her earlier years, Mary worked in the office of Shenango China. She then devoted her time to being a loving homemaker. An active member of St. Vitus Church, she often volunteered for the church and school and was a member of the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed playing cards and belonged to different card clubs, including the Merry Mams. A very friendly person, Mary will always be remembered as a devoted mother and grandmother who loved to spend time with her family, especially her granddaughter. Mary is survived by her daughter, Pamela and husband Dr. J. Fred Stoner of New Castle; sisters, Lena Audino, Pauline Caravella, and Catherine (Lollie) DeLillo, all of New Castle; and granddaughter and love of her life, Joana Marie. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Franceschelli, and brothers, Anthony and Francis Masinando. Grace Spiers
Grace E. Spiers, 95, formerly of Franklin Avenue, of E. Pearl Street, passed away the morning of May 4, 2015. Born on March 1, 1920 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late William and Carrie Elizabeth Stevenson Moore. On November 27, 1941, she married her beloved husband, Thomas J. Spiers, and the two spent over 59 years together until he preceded her in death on May 29, 2001. In her early years, Grace worked as a gold liner for Shenango Pottery. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. An avid fisherwoman, Grace spent many years vacationing in Canada. She also enjoyed painting. Grace is survived by her daughters, Sharon Staph and husband Nunzie, Suzanne Spiers, and Sally Pia and husband Frank, all of New Castle; sister, Dolores Kerr of Rapid City, SD; and grandchildren, Nunzio Staph, Suellen Staph, and Sean Morgan. Bert DeSanzo
Bert William DeSanzo, 67, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of May 4, 2015 at UPMC Passavant Hospital. Born on April 12, 1948 in Beaver Falls, PA, he was the son of Ann M. Malizia DeSanzo of New Castle and the late Bert Ray DeSanzo. Surviving at home is his companion for 16 years, Brenda Parsons. Bert was the owner and operator of DeSanzo Electronics. He was a member of St. Vitus Church. An avid musician, Bert played the guitar and especially loved playing the fiddle; he also won the Tri-State Singing Award. He also enjoyed building street rods, muscle cars, bikes, and trikes. Bert also was a ham radio operator. In addition to his mother and companion, Bert is survived by his daughter, Tammy Perkins and husband Michael of New Castle; grandchildren, Ellie Perkins and Branden Perkins; and dogs, Peenie and Pookie. Francis Borrelli
Francis C. (Vaughn) Borrelli, 86, of Neshannock Township, passed away the evening of May 3, 2015 at his residence. Born on December 5, 1928 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Francisco and Jennie Panella Borrelli. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 62 years, the former Jeanne Tammelleo, whom he married on October 9, 1952. A local business owner, Francis was the owner and operator of several local downtown parking lots. He was a member of St. Camillus Church. An avid sports fan, Francis enjoyed watching Pittsburgh’s and Penn State University’s sports teams. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #512. In addition to his wife, Francis is survived by his children, Vincent Borrelli and wife Eileen, Linda Newell and husband Reed, John Borrelli and wife Donna, all of New Castle, and Diane Acchione of Medford, NJ; brother, Richard Borrelli of New Castle; grandchildren, Joel Borrelli, Becky Harlan, Leanne Borrelli, David Cumo, Mark Cumo, Victoria Carbone, and Evan Acchione; and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Joseph and Jack Borrelli. Kristen Wingert
Kristen Joeliene Wingert, 46, of Highland Avenue, passed away the morning of May 9, 2015 at her residence. She was born June 24, 1968 in Erie, PA. She is survived by her parents, Joel and Avis Marshall Wingert of New Castle. After graduating from Laurel High School in 1986, she attended Lancaster Bible College. She worked at various personal care homes as a caregiver for the elderly and also as an EMT. Kristen will be remembered for her generous spirit – always helping others. She was a very dedicated care-giver to her grandmother for many years. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her children, Joel Wingert III, Emily Wingert, Cheyenne Dando, Carrie Dando, and Dakota Monroe, all of New Castle; brother, Joel Wingert in Poulsbo, WA; and grandchild, Gracyn. Nicholas Orrico
Nicholas J. Orrico, 35, of New Castle, passed away the afternoon of September 13, 2015 at Allegheny General Hospital. He was born on January 23, 1980 in New Castle. Nicholas is survived by his father, Richard (Rocky) Orrico and wife Geri Orrico of New Castle, and mother, Sheri Sines Orrico of New Castle. Nicholas worked as a concrete finisher with Dave Murphy at Murphy Concrete. A 1998 graduate of Laurel High School, he earned an Associate’s Degree from Youngstown State University. Nicholas was an animal lover and loved his dogs, Cyrus and Risto. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed working with his hands doing home remodeling and landscaping. In addition to his parents, Nicholas is survived and will be sadly missed by his companion, Cindy Frederick of New Castle; brother, Ryan Orrico of Lancaster, PA; step-brother, Zac Romeo of New Castle; step-sister, Kylee Romeo of Moon Township, PA; maternal grandmother, Shirley Sines of New Castle; and several loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Joseph L. Jr. and Ernestine (Tina) Orrico, and maternal grandfather, H. Jay Sines. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Services are private. Interment will take place in Castleview Memorial Gardens.
