Jeffrey E. Zeigler, 62, of Willowbrook Rd. passed away the afternoon of May 18, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on April 14, 1952, Jeffrey was the son of the late Merle and Ada Campbell Zeigler. Jeffrey was a retired electrician having worked for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local No. 712. Jeffrey was active within his community and the Shenango Area School District. He was a past member of the Shenango Area School Board and had coached the Shenango Pop Warner football teams. He was also a past board member of the Lawrence County Career and Technical Center. He enjoyed reading and was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 243. Jeffrey will be sadly missed by his family and all who knew him. Jeffrey is survived by his two children, Jeff Zeigler and his wife Allison of New Castle; Kelly Zeigler and her fiancé Jerry Kovach of Pittsburgh; his two brothers, Richard Zeigler and his wife Amy; Merle Zeigler and wife Geanie, both of New Castle; and his former wife, Charlene Tanner of New Castle. Shirley J. Caravella, 76, passed away the afternoon of May 22, 2014 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born in New Castle on May 18, 1938, Shirley was the daughter of the late George, Sr. and Harriet Hiler Evans. Preceding her in death on January 21, 1984 is her husband, Peter Caravella, Sr. In earlier years, Shirley had worked as a restaurant hostess. She enjoyed crocheting, working word puzzles and loved cats. She is survived by her three children, Peter Caravella, Jr. and his wife Veronica of New Castle; Joseph E. Caravella of New Castle; and Michael A. Caravella and his wife Jodi of New Castle; her brother, George Evans, Jr. of Slippery Rock; her sisters, Dorothy Mangieri of New Castle; and Evelyn Gai Bowers and her husband John of Slippery Rock; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by an infant brother and her grandson, Peter Caravella III. A. Anthony (Tony) Rich
A. Anthony (Tony) Rich, 102, formerly of N. Beaver Street passed away the evening of May 24, 2014 in the Avalon Nursing Center. He was born April 15, 1912 in Leetonia, PA and was the son of the late Alexander and Assunta Penna Rich. On June 19, 1947 he married his wife the former Kathryn Schuffert. She preceded him in death on November 13, 2006. Mr. Rich managed and operated the Pennzoil Gas Station on the corner of Mill Street and Falls Street. He was a United States Air Force veteran, 13th Air Division; serving in the South Pacific Theater during World War II. He enjoyed gardening, was a baseball and avid fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates and he was also a fan of boxing. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather who’s greatest joy was the time spent with his family. He was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish and served as an usher for many years for St. Mary’s Church. Mr. Rich is survived by his son, Robert Rich and wife Mary Ann of New Castle; a granddaughter, Joanna Rich and a great-granddaughter, Sophia Rich. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Joseph Rich and Barney Rich and three sisters, Mary Rich, Florence Rich and Rose Rich. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3000 Wilmington Road. A mass of christian burial will be celebrated by Father William Siple on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. Joseph Zarilla
Joseph Zarilla, Sr., 71, of Clen-Moore Place; formerly of W. Kenneth Avenue passed away the morning of May 27, 2014 in Clen-Moore Place. He was born November 4, 1942 in Marcianise Caserta, Italy and was the son of the late Vincenzo and Josephine Guliano Zarilla. He married Sandra L. Weatherby on March 19, 1971 and she survives. Mr. Zarilla retired from Shenango China. He enjoyed playing bocce, mora, softball and baseball and also enjoyed visiting casinos. His greatest happiness was from the time spent with his family. Joseph was a member of St. Vitus Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children; his daughter, Jodi Zarilla-Zoltani of New Castle and his son, Joseph Zarilla, Jr. of West Virginia; two brothers, Patsy Zarilla and wife Marlene and James Zarilla and wife Terry all of New Castle and one grandchild, Danny Zoltani. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Brian Tanner. Visitation will be Thursday from 10:00 AM – 12:00 Noon at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3000 Wilmington Road. Richard Macri
Richard R. (Rack) Macri, 77, of New Castle, passed away the morning of May 27, 2014 at his residence. Born in Hillsville, Pa. on September 3, 1936, Richard was the son of the late Gaspero and Ammecolata Luca Macri. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife, the former Frances Parente, whom he married on August 10, 1957. Richard was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. Richard retired from Laborers Union Local No. 1058. He had worked for Lindy Paving, Inc., Ro-Med Construction and IA Construction Companies. He enjoyed gardening and time spent with his neighbors and friends. Nothing was more important to Richard than his family. He was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather who cherished his family. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In addition to his wife, Richard is survived by his three children, Ricky and his wife Beth Whiteman Macri of New Castle; Randy and his wife Luanne Hamilton Macri of New Castle; Lisa and her husband Pat Currie of Chippewa Township; his brother, Joseph Macri and his wife Connie of Massapequa, NY; and his five grandchildren, Justin, Jordan, Tara, Brennan and Amanda. Thomas Ginocchi, Sr.
Thomas A. Ginocchi, Sr., 70, of New Castle passed away the morning of May 29, 2014 at his residence. Born on April 10, 1944 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Anthony and Julia Sniezek Ginocchi. Surviving him at home is his beloved wife of 47 years, the former Carol Fulena, whom he married on October 8, 1966. After 43 years of working, Thomas retired from his job as a millwright for Local Union #2235. He was a member of St. Vitus Church. A member of the National Corvette Restorer Society, Thomas was a classic car enthusiast who especially loved Corvettes. He also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Lawrence County Building Trades Council. Thomas also served on the Board of Directors for Riverside Apartments. Thomas always will be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose greatest joy came from spending time with his family. Helen M. Sikofilos Anderson, 72, of Augusta, GA passed away the evening of May 28, 2014. Born on December 17, 1941 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Clementos and Mary Zuzow Sikofilos. A 1980 graduate of nursing school, Helen was a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a member of St. Mary On The Hill Catholic Church in Augusta, GA. She loved gardening and was an avid Georgia football fan. Helen is survived by her son, Mike Italia and Shannon of Jacksonville, FL, and brother, William Sikofilos. There will be no calling hours. Josephine Marinelli Petro
Josephine Rita Marinelli Petro, swiftly and peacefully went home to be with Jesus with her loving family near her, and in the care of diligent and hospitable staff, at Jameson Memorial Hospital, New Castle, at 9:29 p.m. Friday, May 30, 2014. She was 82. Mrs. Petro was born June 4, 1931 in New Castle to Anthony Sr. and Helen Delanzo Marinelli. She was the eldest of their five children. She was a graduate of New Castle High School; and studied cosmetology at New Castle Beauty Culture. Mother operated a hair salon for many years, including an in-home beauty shop built by her husband, Michael Petro Sr., on Grigsby Street in Shenango Township. She later did hair for residents at The Almira Home. The Petros formerly owned and rented residencies in town, including an olive green apartment building in front of their home on Franklin Avenue. During retirement, she lovingly and diligently served her brothers, Joe and Anthony, as a receptionist at their local business, City Trailer Sales. Mother loved music. As a teen, she sang and played guitar live with Joann Ritchie on WKST radio in New Castle in the mornings, as “The Blossom Sisters” with guests that included her brother Anthony. She loved art, and painted a mural of a country scene that hung on her living room wall. Mother studied health foods and loved to walk. At 78, she was putting in a mile every day at the old Town Mall. She loved being an American. She was a member of the AmVets Ladies Auxiliary, New Castle, and marched in many patriotic parades in town. Mother simply loved New Castle. She spent most of her life on the East Side, where she proudly grew up, raised her youngest children and retired. Her favorite restaurant was Pagleys, where she ate raviolis just a few weeks ago. She enjoyed meeting up with her friends at places like Burger King, Eat n’ Park and McDonalds. With her feisty and outgoing personality — and her beautiful red hair — people knew and loved Mother everywhere she went. She quickly became a favorite at Avalon Nursing Center, New Castle, where she became a resident in the spring of 2010. Mother loved God. She believed in prayer and healing, and raised her children in the Church. She loved family, including her children, brothers, sisters and many nieces and nephews. She loved her friends. She had lots of them. Josephine was married to Michael Petro Sr., who preceded her in death on Dec. 25, 1994. Her first husband was Chuck Gross, who passed away Dec. 25, 2003. Surviving are: four children, Diane L. Malinchak, Hendersonville, Tenn.; Cynthia C. Smith, wife of Albert, Shenango Township; Michael J. Petro Jr., in California; and Felicia A. Petro, Grove City; four siblings, Joseph Marinelli, husband of Jackie; Anthony Marinelli II, husband of Sandy; Prudence Jones, all Neshannock Township; and Clara Warner, of New Castle;, five grandchildren and their spouses; one great grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation is Tuesday from 4PM to 7PM and Wednesday morning from 10AM to 11AM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc. 941 S. Mill St. Services will be held on Wednesday at the funeral at 11AM officiated by Pastor Sam Hill of Faith Gospel Fellowship in Leesburg. Interment will take place in St. Vitus Cemetery. Mary Park
Mary A. (Bella) Park, 79, of New Castle passed away the evening of May 26, 2014 in Kindred Hospital. She was born July 27, 1934 in New Castle and was the daughter of the late Antonio and Angeline Russo Rozzi. On October 9, 1965 she married her husband, Charles Park. He preceded her in death August 4, 1989. Mrs. Park was a homemaker and her family meant the world to her. She enjoyed watching softball games, was a movie buff and enjoyed playing bingo during her time at Golden Hill Nursing Home. She was a loving wife, mother and sister and her greatest joy was the time spent with her family. Mary was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish. She is survived by three children, Angie Park, Larry Park and Chuckie Park all of New Castle and two sisters, Caroline Natale and Angela Rispoli both of New Castle. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dominick, Benjamin, Michael, Samuel, Alphonse (Chick) and Andrew (Chuck) Rozzi and a sister, Madeline Rozzi. Doris R. Clark, 88, passed away the afternoon of May 25, 2014 at Rhodes Estates. Born in Chester, Delaware on January 21, 1926, Doris was the daughter of the late Ara and Mary Thompson Bowen. Preceding her in death on November 8, 2000 is her husband, Earl Clark. In earlier years, Doris had worked as a counter for Shenango China. She was a seamstress and enjoyed needle pointing. She is survived by three children, Earl (Ed) Clark and his wife Linda of Lufkin, TX; David Clark and his wife Suzanne of Rochelle, IL; and Marlene Fair and her husband Joseph of New Castle; eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Doris is preceded in death by her daughter, Jan Baron, two grandchildren, Jennifer Baron and Scott Baron, four brothers, Carl Bowen, Fred Bowen, Phil Bowen and Don Bowen and two sisters, Helen Breeding and Marie Neigoot. Albena Chirumbolo
Albena Chirumbolo, 89, of Fields Dr., formerly of E. Lutton St., passed away the morning of June 3, 2014 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on December 4, 1924 in New Castle, Albena was the daughter of the late Felix and Rose Vescio Chirumbolo. She was a devoted and active member of St. Vitus Church where she sang with the choir for many years and volunteered for their yearly summer festival. Albena was a member of the Catholic Daughter’s of America and organized trips to different shrines. She retired from Universal Rundle Corporation where she worked for forty years as a payroll clerk. Albena enjoyed gardening, knitting, crocheting and visiting casinos. She is survived by her sister, Lucy Thomas of New Castle; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Frank Chirumbolo and two sisters, Ida Perrotta and Vencie Chirumbolo. There are no calling hours. Ronnie T. LaMarco, 75, of E. Fairfield Ave passed away on June 3, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born on January 9, 1939 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Romeo and Margaret Santangelo LaMarco. Ronnie was self-employed as an appliance repairman. He was a member of St. Vitus Church and also belonged to the Sons of Italy, Moose Lodge #51, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles #455. He loved dancing and classic cars and was a local sports enthusiast. Ronnie is survived by his children, Angela Tarasyuk of Laguna Woods, CA, Marguerite Fusco and husband John of Rancho Margarita, CA, Romeo T. LaMarco III of Harrisburg, PA, and Christopher LaMarco of Cape Cod, MA; sisters, Dena Leshinsky of New Castle and Marlene Ballinger of Fallbrook, CA; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Edith S. Frankovich, 84, of Penny Lane passed away the morning of June 4, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on May 13, 1930 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie Boron Anton. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of 27 years, Joseph Frankovich Sr., whom she married on May 13, 1987. Edith had worked as a sales clerk for Treasure Island. She was also a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish. She enjoyed cooking and baking, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and many friends of all ages. Edith will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her husband, Edith is survived by her daughter, Audrey Salamon of New Castle; step-children, Joseph Frankovich, Jr. and Kim Gwin, both of New Castle; two grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren. Alice Biordi
Alice M. Biordi, 92, of New Castle passed away the evening of June 5, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on January 17, 1922 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Donato and Rosina Lastoria Prioletti. On September 25, 1941, she married her beloved husband, the late Robert F. Biordi, and the two spent 67 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on May 30, 2009. Known for her wonderful Italian cooking, Alice worked as a cook for Parkstown Restaurant for over 20 years. She was a current member and one of the founders of Ladies of the Dukes. She also was a member of St. Vitus Church. An active participant in local politics for many years, Alice served as an election official for the 3rd Ward of New Castle. While she loved to play cards, her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends, especially during Sunday dinners. Alice is survived by her children, Robert Biordi and wife Pattie and Leanna Hoffman, all of New Castle; grandchildren, Alissa Siefert and husband Mike, Don Biordi and wife Sabra, Kylie Cermenaro and husband Jay, Amy DeVite, and John DeVite; and nine great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Cook, Clara Colaluca, Ida Fenati, and Ann Crisci; brothers, Dr. John Prioletti, Arthur Prioletti, Floyd Prioletti, and Andrew Prioletti; and son-in-law, Dr. Ellis Hoffman. William Manolis
William Manolis, 85, of Neshannock Township died peacefully with his five sons and family at his side the morning of June 4, 2014 in Jameson Hospital. He was born November 18, 1928 in Sabraton, WV and was the son of the late James and Evangeline Caperis Manolis. On September 7, 1958 he married his wife, the former Rose Moses. She preceded him in death October 23, 2003. Mr. Manolis was a gentle and quiet man who led by example, and had a great sense of humor. He provided well for his family and loved to be with his sons, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren. After thirty plus years of service, he retired from the Internal Revenue Service where he worked as a Federal Agent. He was a United States Army veteran; serving in the Korean War. William was an avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. He was a member of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. William is survived by five sons, James Manolis and wife Rosemary , John Manolis, Thomas Manolis, Nicholas Manolis and wife Jacqueline all of New Castle and Steven Manolis and wife Cynthia of Randolph, NJ; a brother, Steve Manolis of Chicago and nine grandchildren, William, Nicholas, Macy Rose, Taylor, Maddison, Julia, Alexa, Jack and Mark. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Nick Manolis. Bobby Pope, 63, of 26 N. Jefferson St. died the evening of Saturday, May 31, 2014. He was born on March 22, 1951 in Sylacauga, Alabama and was the son of the late Earline Pope Corbin and Charles Burns. Bobby had worked as a car detailer. He is survived by his brother, Edward Lee Corbin of Sanford, NC; three sisters, Nancy Ellis of New Castle; Peggy Fair of Glennville, GA; and Cynthia Miles of New Castle. Billie J. Rodgers, 69, of E. Washington St. passed away the morning of June 11, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was born on March 3, 1945 in Sharon, PA. Preceding her in death are her loving parents, Carl and Chloe Reed Rodgers. Billie had previously worked as a teller for Sky Bank. She loved ceramics and her dog Candy. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Billie is survived by her stepdaughter, Pamela Masters of New Castle, several nieces and nephews, great-niece and great-nephews, and great-great-nieces. Joan M. Cover, 78, of Wilmington Rd. passed away the morning of June 12, 2014 at her residence. Born in Ellwood City on July 3, 1935, Joan was the daughter of the late John and Josephine Zohosky Frickanish. Preceding her in death on January 1, 2014, is her husband, Floyd Milton Cover, whom she married on June 8, 1974. Joan was a member of Mary, Mother of Hope Parish. Joan retired after thirty dedicated years of teaching at Shenango Elementary School. During this time she was awarded “The Gift of Time” for teaching and was listed three times in the “Who’s Who” among America’s Teachers. She was a member of the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association. She is survived by her brother, John “Jack” Frickanish and his wife Ruth of Ellwood City and her sisters, Anna Mae Nerti and husband Phil of Wampum; Joyce Dailey and husband Richard of Girard, OH; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, Joan is preceded in death by her brother, James Frickanish. Visitation is Friday from 3PM to 6PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. A procession will leave the funeral home on Saturday morning at 10AM for St. Mary’s Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30AM. Rev. Father James Downs pastor of Christ the King Parish will officiate. Burial will take place at Castle View Memorial Gardens.
Barbara Bartley
Barbara J. Bartley, 80, formerly of Old Pittsburgh Rd passed away the afternoon of June 12, 2014 at Haven Convalescent Home. Born on February 23, 1934 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late John and Eva Bruce. On October 20, 1951, she married her beloved husband, Marvin H. Bartley, and the two spent 56 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on December 25, 2007. After more than 15 years of service, Barbara retired from her job as a nurse’s aid for Hill View Manor. She loved attending bluegrass festivals with her husband. Barbara lived for her family and especially adored her grandchildren; her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Barbara is survived by her children, Randall Bartley and Terry Omer and husband Ray, all of New Castle; sister, Shirley Isabella of New Castle; eleven grandchildren; and seventeen grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sons, Gary Bartley and Frederick Bartley; brothers, Fred Bruce and Raymond Bruce; and sisters, Norma Flickner, Elsie Rhodes, Gula Benegasi, and Johnadina Patsy. Visitation will be held Monday from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home 3000 Wilmington Rd. A service will be conducted Monday at 1:00pm at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Dennis Bupp. Interment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.
Winnie Miles
Winnie I. Miles, 75, of Jamestown, PA passed away the morning of June 11, 2014 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on December 21, 1938 in West Union, WV, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Juanita Watson Perine. Also preceding her in death is her beloved husband, Glenn Miles. Winnie worked as a self-employed hairdresser. She enjoyed crafts and gardening. Winnie is survived by her children, Candy Foley of Chattanooga, TN, Marsha Pocza and husband William, Maria Rozzi, Julie Lenn, and Michael Rozzi and wife Debbie, all of New Castle; brothers, Gary Perine of Colorado, Larry Perine of West Pittsburg, PA, and Charlie Perine of Colorado; sisters, Jane Olinger of Ellwood City, Pat Ferguson of Ellwood City, and Diane Lucas of New Castle; twelve grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. There will be no calling hours, and services will be private. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St.
