Linda Lykins

Linda P. Lykins, 59, of New Castle passed away the evening of March 25, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born on April 17, 1954 in Glen Dale, WV, she was the daughter of Betty Cromer Soles and the late James “Ike” Soles. On February 14, 1970, she married her beloved husband, the late Hubert Lykins, and the two spent over 30 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on November 7, 2002. Linda worked as a nurse for Rhodes Estates and was a former member of the Evangel Community Church. She enjoyed reading, gardening, knitting, crocheting, baking, and traveling. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially during their game nights. In addition to her mother, Linda is survived by her children, Hubert Lykins of Ashlind, OH, Scott Lykins of Berkely Springs, WV, Curtis Lykins of Kronenwetter, WI, Melissa Lykins of New Castle, and Linda McDermott of New Castle; brothers, James Soles and Ike Soles, both of WV; sisters, Wilda Nedley of GA, Debbie Coleman of WV, and Betty Litman of WV; and seven grandchildren, Caitlyn, Audra “Peeps”, Little Hughie, Davianna, Alyssa, Tyler, and Ryan. In addition to her father and husband, she is preceded in death by her brother, Larry Soles. Visitation will be held Saturday 2pm to 5pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. Following the visitation, a service will be held at 5pm at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Kenneth Meyer of First Assembly of God of New Castle. Burial will take place at Oak Park Cemetery.

Paul DeLeone

Paul C. DeLeone, 86, of Million Dr. passed away the afternoon of March 16, 2014 in the Butler VA Hospital. Born in New Castle on March 31, 1927, Paul was the son of the late Michael and Concetta Russo DeLeone. On April 30, 1949, Paul married the love of his life, the former Mary Lou McCree. She preceded him in death on January 28, 1981. Paul was a member of St. Vitus Church. He was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Paul retired from Shenango China where he worked in the maintenance department. Paul was known to build anything, fix anything, was a handyman and was known as a jack of all trades. He was an avid sportsman and enjoyed golf, bowling, hunting and fishing. Most of all he cherished the times he spent with his family and grandchildren. He is survived by his four children, Paul DeLeone and wife Deanna of Ashtabula, OH; Debra French of New Castle; Susan Shorts and husband Joe of Sebring, FL; Ricky DeLeone and wife Angie of Edinburg; his son-in-law, Jim Reebel of New Castle; his companion, Marie Latsko, his eleven grandchildren, Paul, Billy, Brandon, Jason, Danielle, Samantha, Courtney, Brianna, Brittany, Michael, Concetta and three great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Paul is preceded in death by his daughter, Diane Reebel; his son-in-law, Dennis French, four brothers, Anthony DeLeone, Dominick DeLeone, Samuel DeLeone and Marion DeLeone; four sisters, Mary Micco, Clara George, Sue Bohizic and Anna Knorr. Visitation is Wednesday from 5pm to 8pm at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites at the funeral home on Thursday morning at 9:15AM. A procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30AM for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM. Rev. Father William Siple of St. Vitus Church will officiate. Burial will take place in St. Vitus Cemetery.

Doris Irene Minner Applegate, 85, of Franklin Ave., Ellwood City, passed away the evening of March 30, 2014 in the Avalon Nursing Home. Born in New Castle on April 11, 1928, Doris was the daughter of the late Bryan Jennings and Margaret Irene Rodgers Minner. Preceding her in death in 1997 is her husband, Lester C. Applegate. She enjoyed sewing, doing seamstress work and reading. She is survived by her daughter, Cindy Majors Jeffrey of Ellwood City; her son, John William Majors of Wellsboro, OH; her brothers, Richard Minner of New Castle; James Minner and wife Jean of Mt. Jackson; her niece, Jenny Minner of Mt. Jackson; seven grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Doris is preceded in death by her former husband, John Kenneth Majors, her grandson, John William Majors, Jr. and her sister, Patricia A. Minner-Newton. Visitation is Wednesday from 4PM to 6PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A service will be held at 6PM on Wednesday at the funeral home officiated by Rev. Gaylord M. Byers, 67, of New Castle passed away March 31, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born on October 11, 1946 in New Castle, Gaylord was the son of the late Kenneth M. and Vivian E. Vogan Byers. Surviving at home is his wife, the former Nikkie Martino, whom he married on October 7, 2000. He was a member of the Croton Methodist Church and had served with the National Guard. Gaylord had previously worked for Mesta Machine Corporation, Nepco Plastics and IPEC. He was an avid fan of football and baseball and enjoyed watching the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Gaylord cherished the times he spent with his family and watching his grandchildren play softball and baseball. In addition to his wife, Gaylord is survived by his three children, Curtis Byers and wife Stacey of New Castle; Mary Stone of New Castle; David Byers of Coraopolis; three stepchildren, Marlene Regan and husband Mackenzy; Renee Gibbs and Gregory Gibbs, Jr., all of New Castle; his sister, Diana Biller of Texas and twelve grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, stepdaughter, Crystal Al-Ababseh and grandson, Cameron Tranquillo. Visitation is Thursday from 5PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A service will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 12Noon officiated by Rev. Born on December 17, 1942 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Chester and Mildred Crabill Biddle. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of 50 years, the former Katie Huang. Warren previously served his country in the U.S. Army. In addition to his wife, Warren is survived by his daughters, Kathy Hraczo and husband Frank, Karen Sheldone and husband Jim, Kim Hietsch and husband Michael, and Kelly Iwanejko and husband Jeff, all of New Castle; brother, Gary Biddle of New Castle; sister, Corrine Piccari of New Castle; six grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren. Carl E. (Frank) Barton, 85, of Shenango Township passed away the morning of April 4, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born in New Castle on October 6, 1928, he was the son of the late Harry and Marie Smith Barton. Surviving him at home is his beloved wife of over 60 years, the former Ardyth Cochran. After 30 years, Carl retired from his job as Head of Maintenance for Shenango Elementary School, and he also drove school bus for Shenango School District. He served his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Warren was a devoted member of Savannah United Methodist Church, belonging to the church choir and their Over 55 Club. He also enjoyed playing golf, making crafts, and puzzles, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Carl is survived by his children, Wesley Barton and wife Chris of New Castle, David Barton and wife Carole of Richmond, VA, and Robert Barton and wife Sandy of Anchorage, AL, Jerilynne Kuczynski and husband John of New Castle, and Kathy Porada of New Castle; sisters, Tillie Mitchell, Barbara Barton, and Nancy Bintrim, all of New Castle; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Bill and Harry Barton. Visitation will be held Sunday at 4:00pm to 8:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites at 7:45pm Sunday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Monday at 11:00am at Savannah United Methodist Church, officiated by Rev. Laura Puleo. Interment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.

Carole Ann Shuler Barber, 71, of New Castle passed away on April 5, 2014, at the Haven Convalescent Home due to complications from Multiple Sclerosis. She was born in New Castle on June 3, 1942, the daughter of the late Harold, Sr. and Sarah Russell Shuler. Carole had previously worked at the Lawrence County Correctional Facility as a cook and in earlier years, Airway Luggage. Survivors include her daughter, Karin Shriver and husband Mark of Boise, Idaho, two grandchildren, Ashleigh Croushore and Pearce Shriver; her sister, Donna Lyons; her nephew, Nicholas Shuler, Sr. and his wife Karole of New Castle and her niece, Rita Shuler of Roanoke, Texas. In addition to her parents, Carole is preceded in death by her brother, Harold Pearce Shuler & his wife Ann Peluso Shuler. There will be no calling hours. Burial will take place in Oak Park Cemetery. Viola Antonelli

Viola M. (PeeWee) Antonelli, 82, of Union Township, passed away the morning of April 7, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born in New Castle on February 3, 1932, Viola was the daughter of the late Charles and Caroline Conti Pagley. Surviving at home is her loving and devoted husband of sixty years, Anthony Antonelli, whom she married on November 21, 1953. Viola was a lifelong devoted member of St. Vitus Church. She was the current president of the Ladies Guild and was very active in participating in many of the churches activities, including the annual church festival and food giveaways. Viola retired from Treasure Island Department Store where she worked as a clerk in the houseware department. Prior to that, she worked for Sears Roebuck Company in the credit office. Viola enjoyed visiting casinos. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She was good hearted and was known as her family’s caregiver. Above all, Viola cherished the times she spent with her family and friends. She will be sadly missed by all her family, friends and within the church community. In addition to her husband Anthony, Viola is survived by her two children, her son, Charles Antonelli and wife Debbie, her daughter, Mary Jo Antonelli and her companion, Patrick McMahon, both of New Castle; her brother, Anthony (Tony) Pagley and his wife Pearl of New Castle; her twin sister, Victoria (Dolly) DeMatteis of New Castle; two grandchildren, Nicole Toombs, Lisa Colich and husband Josh and three great grandsons, Aidan, Carson and Mason. She is preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Mario DeMatteis. Visitation is Thursday from 5PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:30AM for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM. Rev. Her father preceded her in death and her mother survives and resides in Wampum. In addition to her mother, she is survived by three sons, James Hill of Ellwood City, John Hill of New Castle and Jason Dawarel of Ellwood City; one daugther, Saraysha Dawarel of West Virginia and five brothers, Garvin R. Hill, Jr. of Wampum, Robert Hill of Tucson, AZ and John Hill, Matthew Hill and Scott Hill all of South Dakota. There will be no visitation and a memorial service will be held at a later date. Mary A. Whiteman, 90, formerly of W. Meyer Ave passed away the evening of April 1, 2014 at Haven Convalescent Home. She was born on January 10, 1924 to John and Mary Staransky Stofcik in New Castle, PA. She married her loving husband, Wilbur F. Whiteman, and the two spent 62 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on November 29, 2009. Mary lived in Detroit, MI out of high school at Briggs Corp making airplane parts. She met her wonderful husband and father of their children-Wilbur. They worked together all their lives starting with Parkstown Drive-In-Theatre. They owned the Calls Plaza Isaly’s, the Lawrence Village Dairy Queen, and two laundromats. She was also a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish. Mary loved traveling and taking her grandchildren to many different places. She also enjoyed participating in several dance competitions with her husband. She was a devoted, loving, and caring wife, mother, and grandmother. She will finally be reunited with her one true love. Mary is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Ricky Macri; grandchildren, Justin of Seattle, WA and Jordan of New Castle; sister, Dorothy Skufca of Ohio; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Whiteman of New Castle. In addition to her parents and husband, Mary is preceded in death by her son, James Lee Whiteman; brother, John (Herky) Stofcik; sister, Irene Bloise; and twin brother and sister who passed at birth. At Mary’s request, there were no calling hours, and a private service was held at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St, conducted by Rev. William Siple of Mary Mother of Hope Parish. Burial took place at St. Joseph Cemetery. Born in Greenville, Pa. on April 20, 1932, Barbara was the daughter of the late Joseph and Marie Smith Eddy. She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Taylor whom she married on October 10, 1953. Barbara retired from the Penn Power Company where she worked as a switchboard operator. She enjoyed reading, working crosswords and cooking. Barbara cherished the times she spent with her family and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. In addition to her husband, Barbara is survived by her three sons, Robert H. Taylor and wife Barbara of Wampum; Ronald J. Taylor and wife Sheila of Talmo, GA; Raymond Taylor and wife Maria of Wampum; her brother, Robert Eddy of New Castle; two sisters, Marge Thompson of Greenville, PA; Alma Winkler of Mesa, AZ; her aunt, Naomi Smith of Meadville, PA; and her five grandchildren, Brandon, Brock, Jared, Jessica and Edward Taylor and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Patrick M.T. Nieswiadomy, Sr., 64, of Warren Ave. passed away April 12, 2014 at Kindred Hospital in Beaver, Pa. Born in Buffalo, NY on March 17, 1950, Patrick was the son of the late Michael and Mary Fugas Nieswiadomy. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife, the former Darleen Barnes, whom he married on April 23, 1977 and renewed their vows in 1997. Patrick was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Church and enjoyed making palm crosses for Palm Sunday. He had worked for Fowler Taxi Cab Service. Prior to that, Patrick had worked for the Yellow Cab Company where he also worked as a dispatcher. He and his wife had also been co-owners of the Rainbow Taxi Cab Service. Patrick loved music and was an accomplished drum player. He also enjoyed fishing. Patrick was a very caring and loving man who was proud of his Polish heritage. He will be sadly missed by his family and everyone who knew him. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Patrick M.T. Nieswiadomy, Jr. of New Castle; his aunts, Katie Hruska of New Castle; Jul Fugus of VA; cousins, Deborah Fugus of VA; Florence Nieswiadomy and Irene Sitarek, both of Buffalo, NY; Renee Cantwell and husband Gregory of NJ; his nephew, Gary Barnes and wife Deanna, his niece, Robin Holliday and husband Deroy, both of New Castle; six great nephews, two great-great-nephews, two great-great-nieces and a special friend, Thomas Skowronski of Buffalo, NY. William L. Michael, 77, of Union Township passed away the morning of April 15, 2014 at the Edison Manor and Rehabilitation Center. Born in New Castle on July 13, 1936 in New Castle, William was the son of the late Orville and Virginia Cooper Michael. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, the former Sally L. McCune whom he married on December 31, 1957. William was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he proudly designed a tool to measure the wear on brushes in aircraft motors without removing the engines. He had worked as a master industrial electrician for Babcock and Wilcox Corporation, Shenango China and for Koppel Steel, where he eventually retired from. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed computers. William also enjoyed building and flying remote controlled airplanes. Above all else, William cherished the times with his family and will be sadly missed. In addition to his wife, William is survived by his two sons, William L. Michael, III and wife Dawn of New Wilmington; Robert L. Michael and wife Lisa Joseph of Union Township; his sister, Shirley Michael of Warren, OH; one grandchild, Bryar Michael; four step grandchildren, George, Amber, Elizabeth, Joshua and three step great grandchildren, Macinley, Nevaeh and Sean. Visitation is Friday from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Born on December 28, 1939 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Edmund and Dorothy Glass Shaw. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of over 50 years, Anthony T. Conti, whom she married on August 9, 1961. Dorothy worked as a data collector for Bell Telephone, and she also was a loving housewife. She was a member of St. Camillus Church. Dorothy loved to spend her time crocheting, camping, and reading. In addition to her husband, Dorothy is survived by her children, Joseph Conti and wife Michele of New Castle, Anthony Conti and wife Ruth of New Castle, and Diana Gehrs and husband Greg of Middletown, OH; sister, Patricia Harvey of New Castle; grandchildren, Joseph, Laura, Lanna, and Brandon Conti and Joshua Gehrs; and great-grandchild, Anthony Quinn. Louis J. Colella, 100, formerly of Meadowview Blvd, passed away the morning of April 20, 2014 at Avalon Nursing Home. Born on December 8, 1913 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Dominic and Josephine Bullano Colella. On July 17, 1941, he married his beloved wife, the former Sylvia M. Zannoni, and the two spent over 65 wonderful years together until she preceded him in death on March 5, 2008. Louis retired from his job at Panella Company of West Pittsburg; prior to that, he worked as a purchasing foreman for Rockwell International. An devoted member of St. Vitus Church, he was a longtime usher. Louis loved gardening, but his greatest joy came from spending time with his family. Louis is survived by his children, Richard L. Colella and wife Ginger of South Lyon, MI and Joanna T. White and husband Harry of New Castle; grandchildren, Richard Colella, Carin Harris, Chris Dibbley, and Elizabeth Chill; and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Frank Colella and Emilio Colella, and sisters, Theresa Gennock, Lenore Conti, and Helen Bertolino. Phyllis A. Walega, 77, of Highland Ave., New Castle, PA, passed away the evening of April 19, 2014 at Jameson hospital. Born in New Castle, PA on September 3, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John D. & Martha V. Keely Kirkwood. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, John J. Walega whom she married August 20, 1960 and who passed away on April 25, 2003. Phyllis was a Real Estate agent since 1990 for Century 21 & Coldwell Banker. Prior to her Real Estate career she was a Region Manager for 23 years for Stanley Home Products representing seven states. She enjoyed camping, however her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Garcia and her husband, Ernesto of New Castle and her son, John D. Walega of New Castle; and two grandchildren, Cameron D. Walega and Kiana Garcia. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Jack Kirkwood and step-sister, Nora Kirkwood. Retired Chief of Police, Daniel A. Malley, Sr., 89, of Ryan Ave. passed away the evening of April 21, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on August 7, 1924, Daniel was the son of the late Luciano and Anna Morga Malizia. Preceding him in death on September 4, 2008 is his wife the former Joan DiDario, whom he married on April 12, 1947. He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. Daniel was a WWII U.S. Army veteran serving in the European Theatre and the Invasion of Normandy. He retired as the Chief of Police in 1987 from the New Castle Police Department after thirty four years of service and dedication to the city. He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Daniel enjoyed playing bocce, playing in several leagues and was instrumental in the planning and construction of the bocce courts at Cascade Park. He enjoyed sports, especially watching his grandchildren over the years playing and coaching. Daniel loved and cherished the times he spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren. He is survived by his three children, Lorraine Geramita; Daniel A. Malley, Jr. and wife Vickie; Paul Malley, Sr. and wife Frances, all of New Castle; his sister, Eleanor Jannetti of New Middletown, OH; eight grandchildren, Dr. Anthony Geramita, Melissa Geramita-Micco and husband Michael, Robert Geramita and wife Gina, Matthew Malley, Jeff Malley, Paul L. Malley, Jr. and wife Leslie, Danielle Hartje and husband Ed, Michael Malley and seven great-grandsons, Antonio, Gianni, Santino, Salvatore, Paul III, Jason and Cameron. In addition to his parents and wife, Daniel is preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Hayleigh Malley, four brothers, Sam Malizia, Joe Malizia, Sr., Louis Malley, infant Benny Malizia and three sisters, Philomena DeSimone, Louise Malley and Pauline Verzilli. Visitation is Thursday from 4PM to 7PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Friday morning at 9:30AM for St. Joseph the Worker Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM by Rev. Father Nicholas Vaskov. Interment will take place at St. Vitus Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military honors at the Cemetery.

James R. Hooks, 50, of Alborn Ave passed away the morning of April 23, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on May 16, 1963 in Lawton, OK, he is the son of James W. and Phyllis Moore Hooks, both of New Castle. James is also survived by his beloved wife of over 20 years, the former Anita Brown, whom he married on June 5, 1993. James owned Jim Hooks Auto Repair in New Castle and was a member of Moose Lodge 51 and Castle Pistol Club. He enjoyed car racing at Mercer Raceway, hunting, and motorcycling. In addition to his wife and parents, James is survived by his children, Jason Hooks, Jill Hooks, Jessica Hooks, and Brian Hooks, all of New Castle; brothers, Scott Hooks and wife Dawn, Rick Hooks and wife Dawn, and Shaun Hooks and wife Kate, all of New Castle; and nine grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, paternal grandparents, and two uncles. Honoring his wishes, there are no calling hours, and services are private. Arrangements entrusted to Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St.
