Mary Doris (Jackson) Shaffer, 92, of New Castle passed away the evening of January 25, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was the third child born of Gilbert H. and Catherine T. (McLaughlin) Jackson. She was born on February 26, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY. On August 9, 1942, she married Ranius (Bud) Shaffer at Sacred Heart Church in Brooklyn, NY. They met when Bud was stationed during World War II in Brooklyn, NY. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2008. Doris worked as a page and then a nurse’s aide before going onto school where she became an LPN. She worked at a Brooklyn hospital for three years before moving to New Castle where they built their home on Schenley Avenue. Doris was hired as an LPN at the Lawrence County Home, later called Hill View Manor. She worked at the County Home for 21 years when she left to become Administrator of St. Joseph Residence. She worked there for 21 years until they closed in 1972 at which time she retired. Doris is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Dorrinne (Maynard) Nemeth, Judith (Peter Sr.) Petrella, and Joyce (Richard Sr.) Regna, all of New Castle. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Tracy Rife, Danielle (Matt) Crans, Linda Clark, Nicole (Don) Gilberg, Michelle (Leo) Orelli, Jr., Peter Petrella, Jr., Tonya (Steve) Evangelista, Richard (Reneé) Regna, Jr., Jeanette (Justin) DiMuccio; and 15 great-grandchildren, Alyssa Rife, Benjamin Crans, Paige, Bailey, and Mallory Gilberg, Logan, Lexi, and Hayden Orelli, Nicholas and Grace Evangelista, Isabella, Luke, and Ryan Regna, and Maria and Ellie DiMuccio. She is also survived by a nephew, John & Margaret Jackson, of Hopewell Junction, NY, and a number of great nieces and great nephews. Doris will also be missed by her best friend and neighbor, Mrs. Wanda Leckfor, and her daughters, Mrs. Donna Hynal and Mrs. Beverly McCosby. In addition to her parents, sister, Mrs. John Catherine (Hazel) McGuire, and brother, John Raymond Jackson, she was also preceded in death by a nephew, John Joseph McGuire, his son, Ronald McGuire, and a great-grandson, Madden Vincent Crans on June 9, 2011. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home Wednesday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Joseph the Worker Church. Entombment will take place in Parkside Mausoleum.
