Joseph F. Roseck, 42, of Edinburg, PA, passed away the evening of January 4, 2015 at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Born on January 30, 1972 in New Castle, he was the son of Max and Shirley Oppedisano Roseck of Edinburg, PA. Also surviving him at home is his beloved wife of nine years, the former Jennifer Kirlik, whom he married on April 2, 2005. Joseph worked as the music director for Christ the King Parish and as a private music teacher for the last 15 years. A devout member of Christ the King Parish, he was a member of the choir, Men’s Group of Christ the King Parish, and the Pastoral Council of the parish. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus Council #512. A Mohawk High School graduate, Joseph attended the Youngstown State University Dana School of Music, and for 21 years, he played with The Dorals. He loved music and passing on music to the youth. Joseph will always be remembered as a loving son, husband, father, brother, and uncle. In addition to his parents and wife, Joseph is survived by twin sons, Joseph Charles II and Max at home; sister, Roseanne Hoffman and husband Brian of Boardman, OH; father-in-law, John Kirlik, Jr.; mother-in-law, Janice Kirlik; nephew, Alex; and niece, Sofia. Donna Jean Cameron Vannatten Smith, 84, of West Parkway St., passed away the morning of January 7, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on December 16, 1930 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late James B. and Dorothy J. Dock Cameron. On October 5, 1973, she married her beloved husband, Kenneth J. Smith, and the two of them spent over 29 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on November 1, 2002. In earlier years, Donna worked at Shenango China and was a nurse’s aide. She was a member of Family Worship Center. She enjoyed boating, camping, and watching the Steelers. Donna loved spending time with her family, especially her children and grandchildren. Donna is survived by her children, Richard Vannatten, Donald L. Vannatten, Timothy J. Vannatten, Jeanne E. Vannatten Hill, and Michael E. Vannatten, all of New Castle; sister, Patricia L. Cameron of New Castle; ten grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her infant sisters, Betty and Ruth; sister, Dorothy Harper; and brother, Jack Cameron. Pauline Carlo
Pauline M. Carlo, 87, of Clen Moore Place passed away the afternoon of January 7, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on November 8, 1927 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Jack and Margaret Jones Grittie. On May 20, 1950, she married her beloved husband, Philip A. Carlo, and the two spent over 53 wonderful years until he preceded her in death on December 13, 2003. Pauline will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Pauline is survived by her children, Kerry Carlo and wife Brenda, Kristy Wright and husband Richard, all of New Castle, Peg Nist and husband Keith of Sanford, FL, and Philip S. Carlo and wife Shelly of New Wilmington; grandchildren, Brandon Macek, Hillary Carlo, Sari Richardson, Justin Carlo, and Gabrielle Carlo; and great-grandson, Thomas Richardson. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her sisters, Barbara and Gert. There are no calling hours planned, and services are private. Vinicio Francis
Vinicio R. Francis, 85, of Fairmont Avenue, passed away the evening of January 11, 2015 at Edison Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born on August 29, 1929 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Gaetano and Antoinetta Cortello Francis. Surviving him at home is his beloved wife of over 57 years, the former Victoria Ranucci, whom he married on June 1, 1957. In 1991, Vinicio retired from his job as the General Foreman of Maintenance for LTV Steel. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Navy during the Korean War Era. He was a member of St. Vitus Church and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge #455. An avid golfer, Vinicio was very proud of getting two holes-in-one. He enjoyed dancing, travelling, bowling, going to Challenges, and playing pool. In addition to his wife, Vinicio is survived by his children, Mark Francis and wife Rudelle of Penfield, NY, Eric Francis of Sewickley, PA, and Vinicia Conway of New Castle; sister, Doloris Iozzi of New Castle; and eight grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Francis. John Panella
John C. Panella, Sr., 91, formerly of West State St passed away the morning of January 12, 2015 at his residence in New Castle. Born in New Castle on July 11, 1923, he was the son of the late Anthony Sr. and Lena (Bongivengo) Panella. Surviving at home is his beloved wife of over 70 years, the former Rosemarie C. Manthy, whom he married on May 17, 1944. During World War II, John served as a Seaman First Class for the United States Navy Armed Guard in the North Atlantic-European Theater from 1942 to 1945. He was also a retiree of Plumpers & Pipefitters Local Union #47 and was a member of the American Legion Post #343, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #315, and the Mariners of Pennsylvania. His family and his Catholic faith were the most important things in his life. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church. Over the years, he sang in the choirs at St. John’s Church, St. Mary’s Church, and the old St. Joseph’s Church. He enjoyed music, reading, being outdoors, hunting, fishing, and welding. As a welder, people called him “Two Pass”. One of the highlights of his life was a trip to Rome, Italy where he saw Pope John Paul II and was an altar server at a Mass in St. John Lateran Church in Rome. He also returned to his family’s ancestral home in Cese di Liberi, Caserta, Italy, where he met with extended family members. In addition to his wife, John is survived by his children, Jane (Panella) Santini and husband Bruno of New Castle, John C. Panella, Jr. and wife Barbara of Celebration, FL, Joyce A. Panella and companion Geoffrey Peluso of New Castle, and Jodi A. Panella of New Castle; grandchildren, Diane (Santini) Sansone, Lynda Santini, Lisa Panella, Jacqueline (Panella) Icaza, John W. Panella, and Lori (Temperato) Battista; great-grandchildren, Alex Ushiro, Tre Icaza, Anna Panella, Milana Battista; step-great-granddaughter, Desiree Tefertiller; sister, Rosemarie (Panella) Andrews; brother, Peter P. Doris Columbus
Doris J. Columbus, 95, passed away the morning of January 13, 2015 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on June 8, 1919 in Belle Vernon, PA, she was the daughter of the late Ralph and Mary Conner Billger. On September 22, 1940, she married her beloved husband, LeRoy G. Columbus, and the two spent over 55 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on January 24, 1996. Doris previously worked at Plaza Maintenance Inc. as a secretary. A devout member of Independent Methodist Church, she was a former greeter and a charter member of the church. Doris is survived by her nephews, Donald Columbus and wife Pat of New Castle and William L. Columbus of Alabama; niece, Vera Mellor-Hiles and husband Mark of Shelocta, PA and Wilda Stevens of Florida; and sister-in-law, Linda Columbus of New Castle. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Warren Billger and James Billger. William Kerr
William Kerr, 76, of West Pittsburg, PA passed away the evening of January 17, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on October 22, 1938 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Sarah Kerr Wooley. Bill enjoyed his time working over the years at Lark Enterprises. Most recently, he attended LCARC Adult Training Facility. Bill loved to read his bible and attend church. He was a devout member of the First Baptist Church. His greatest joy was making people happy by singing, reading, and making them laugh. He will be sadly missed by all as he was one of a kind. William is survived by his sister, Eileen Smith, brothers, Robert Wooley and Randy Wooley, all of New Castle, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his mother, he is preceded in death by his sister, Adora Ruth Wooley. Theresa Macri
Theresa A. Macri, formerly of Worthington Avenue, peacefully passed away on the morning of January 18, 2015 surrounded by family in Monroeville, PA, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 85 years old. Born May 13, 1929 in New Castle, PA, Theresa was amiable, spirited, energetic, feisty, had an entertaining sense of humor, flashing eyes and a charming smile – she smiled and laughed even in her last days. The daughter of the late Pasquale and Maria (Vaturra) Amabile, Theresa graduated from New Castle High School in 1947. She worked as a dietitian assistant at St. Francis Hospital and a plate decorator at Shenango Pottery. She married Eugene P. Macri, the love of her life, on August 20, 1949. She became a homemaker and began raising her family, a son and two daughters. She later worked for several years at Betty’s Bridal Shop on Wilmington Road as a sales clerk and seamstress where she was able to extend her personal knowledge and fashion sense to local customers. Known for her ability to match style with the individual and occasion, she helped select the perfect gown for many a local bride, homecoming and prom queen. She also meticulously sewed seed pearls and added other adornments to the dresses with great care and attention to detail. An active member of St. Vitus Church, Theresa, along with Eugene, worked tirelessly for many years helping to organize the St. Vitus Bazaar. She also was a member of the Christian Mothers and volunteered and donated time in the cafeteria and at other church functions. She enjoyed making crafts, sewing, solving puzzles and murder mysteries, playing cards and bingo, and collecting Hummel figurines; she was a member of the Hummel Collectors’ Club and various neighborhood card clubs. She had a sweet passion for gardening, decorating her house, exercising and walking, and cooking. Her holiday dinners and baked goods are legendary in family lore. She loved music and dancing, especially with her husband, and any occasion could become a gioia di vivere when family and friends were gathered with a little homemade wine and simple foods. She is survived by her son, Eugene P. Macri, Jr., of Waynesboro, PA; her daughter, Rosemary Mendel and husband, Joseph, of Plum Boro, PA; her daughter, Lisa Macri, of Monroeville, PA; and her grandson, Jason R. Mendel, of Apopka, FL. She also is survived by her sisters, Gloria Stanfield of NY, and Margaret Delliquadri of New Castle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Theresa was preceded in death by Eugene, her husband of 55 years, in November 2004. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Italy, Tony, Lawrence, Pasquale (Junior), and Carmen Amabile, and two sisters, Grace DiCaprio and Rose Amabile. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home, 941 S. Mill Street. Norma Iervoline
Norma J. Iervoline, 82, formerly of Vogan Street, passed away the evening of January 21, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born August 16, 1932 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late William and Florence Orlando Conti. On November 29, 1952, she married her beloved husband, Frank L. (Brother) Iervoline, Sr., and the two spent over 51 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death in January 2004. In earlier years, Norma worked for Bell Telephone and as a clerk for Bordonaro’s Fruitland Market. She retired from the Gift Gallery in the Towne Mall. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. In her earlier years, Norma enjoyed bowling. She also loved to cook and bake and always welcomed people into her home. Norma is survived by her sons, Frank and Diana Iervoline of New Castle and Larry and Nancy Iervoline of Plum, PA; grandchildren, Stephanie and Roger West of New York City, NY, Christina Iervoline of New York City, NY, Alexandra Johnson of New Castle, and Francesca Iervoline and Max Iervoline of Plum, PA; sisters, Irene Cubellis of New Castle and Anita Ferrese of Plantation Acres, FL; and many nieces and nephews. Patricia Ann Mort, 83, of Union Township, passed away the morning of January 23, 2015 at her residence. Born on February 21, 1931 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Elmer and Clara Kerringan Black. After 30 years of service, Patricia retired from her job as an assembler for Vitale Fireworks. She was a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish. She loved visiting casinos and her cats. Patricia will always be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother. Patricia is survived by her children, Kim Malizia and Frank Malizia, both of New Castle; brothers, Philip Black of Youngstown, OH and James Black of New Castle; and granddaughter, Alexis. Jennie Graziani
Jennie Graziani, 101, of East Oakwood Way, formerly of Butler Avenue, passed away the morning of January 25, 2015 at Jameson Care Center. Born on December 23, 1913 in Marianna, PA, she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Marie Costanza Damato. Also preceding her in death is her beloved husband of many years, Viero (Yates) Graziani, whom preceded her in death on April 10, 1989. Jennie will always be remembered for her love of family. She married during the Depression years, so helping her parents and siblings was always a priority when she moved to New Castle. She raised four children. She loved sports, especially baseball and the Pittsburgh Pirates, whom she followed for 80 years until last summer. She also met her husband while she was playing softball. Her second favorite pastime was playing poker with friends and family members which she did until she was 96 years old. An avid gardener and baker, her famous pies and cooking were legendary. Jennie was a past member of St. Vitus Church and the Ladies Guild of St. Vitus Church. She was also a past officer of the Italian Sons and Daughters of America, Sons of Italy, and the Unione Calabro Americana Society. Jennie is survived by her children, Alfred (Fred) Graziani and wife Bobbie of Clearwater, FL, Zeta Piccirillo and husband Alexander (Sam) of New Castle, Rosemary Lankford and husband Walker of New Castle, and Susan Phillips and husband Joseph of Export, PA; sister, Philomena (Fannie) Marks of New Castle; grandchildren, Ann Alessi, Luke Graziani, Sandra Seltzer, Mark Graziani, Nicole Jones, Jennie Aderson, Jessica Phillips, and Emily Phillips; and great-grandchildren, Alex, Niko, Matthew, Dante, Mario, Kaitlin, Taylor, Miley, Mia, Isaiah, Lianna, Joey-Lynn, Olivia, and Antonio. Mary Shaffer
Mary Doris (Jackson) Shaffer, 92, of New Castle passed away the evening of January 25, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was the third child born of Gilbert H. and Catherine T. (McLaughlin) Jackson. She was born on February 26, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY. On August 9, 1942, she married Ranius (Bud) Shaffer at Sacred Heart Church in Brooklyn, NY. They met when Bud was stationed during World War II in Brooklyn, NY. He preceded her in death on February 4, 2008. Doris worked as a page and then a nurse’s aide before going onto school where she became an LPN. She worked at a Brooklyn hospital for three years before moving to New Castle where they built their home on Schenley Avenue. Doris was hired as an LPN at the Lawrence County Home, later called Hill View Manor. She worked at the County Home for 21 years when she left to become Administrator of St. Joseph Residence. She worked there for 21 years until they closed in 1972 at which time she retired. Doris is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Dorrinne (Maynard) Nemeth, Judith (Peter Sr.) Petrella, and Joyce (Richard Sr.) Regna, all of New Castle. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Tracy Rife, Danielle (Matt) Crans, Linda Clark, Nicole (Don) Gilberg, Michelle (Leo) Orelli, Jr., Peter Petrella, Jr., Tonya (Steve) Evangelista, Richard (Reneé) Regna, Jr., Jeanette (Justin) DiMuccio; and 15 great-grandchildren, Alyssa Rife, Benjamin Crans, Paige, Bailey, and Mallory Gilberg, Logan, Lexi, and Hayden Orelli, Nicholas and Grace Evangelista, Isabella, Luke, and Ryan Regna, and Maria and Ellie DiMuccio. She is also survived by a nephew, John & Margaret Jackson, of Hopewell Junction, NY, and a number of great nieces and great nephews. Doris will also be missed by her best friend and neighbor, Mrs. Wanda Leckfor, and her daughters, Mrs. Donna Hynal and Mrs. Beverly McCosby. Samuel R. DeLillo, 90, of Las Vegas, Nevada passed away on January 26, 2015. Born on November 11, 1924 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Joseph and Francis Aicone DeLillo. He is also preceded in death by his wife, the former Rita Mele. A longtime resident of Las Vegas, Samuel worked in the casino industry for many years and also enjoyed baseball, golfing, and spending time with his friends and family. Also a decorated World War II veteran, he earned a purple heart at the famous “Battle of the Bulge”. Survivors include a brother, Donald DeLillo and wife Julie, a sister-in-law, Justine DeLillo, all of New Castle, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Joseph F. DeLillo, and an infant brother. Anna May Flamino, 80, of Ashberry Lane passed away the evening of January 28, 2015 at her residence. Born on January 10, 1935 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late Charles J. and Vera Mae Crisci Venturella. On July 5, 1955, she married her beloved husband, Brady J. Flamino, and the two spent over 58 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on February 17, 2014. Anna worked at Liberty Mutual for 14 years. She was a member of Mary Mother of Hope Parish. She enjoyed crafts and was known for her bow making, but Anna’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Anna is survived by her children, Brian A. Flamino and wife Susan, Brady C. Flamino Sr. and wife Diane, all of New Castle, and Marcia of Houston, TX; sister-in-law, Linda Venturella of Poland, OH; grandchildren, Alexandria Flamino, Lea Flamino, Christina Flamino, Brady Flamino Jr., Douglas Flamino, and Steven Flamino; and two great-grandchildren. A devoted wife and mother and a great cook, she loved caring for her family and home. James Krause
James A. Krause, 63, of Thornhill Dr. passed away the evening of January 31, 2015 at UPMC Montefiore Hospital. Born in New Castle on October 24, 1951, James was the son of the late Felix, Jr. and Pearl Withrow Krause. Surviving at home is his wife the former Margaret Edinger. James was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served his country during the Vietnam Era. In earlier years, James worked at Alsy Lighting in Quality Control and had recently worked at the Silgan IPEC Corporation. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 315 and enjoyed gardening and cooking. James loved being surrounded by his family and cherished the times he spent with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, James is survived by his step children, Betsy Johnston of Ellwood City; Patricia Quigley of New Castle; Craig Welsh of Slippery Rock; his brothers, Felix Krause III of South Carolina; Charles Krause and John Krause, both of New Castle and eight grandchildren. Visitation is Tuesday from 5PM to 7PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 914 S. Mill St. A Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday at 11AM. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery.
Darlene Caminiti
Darlene A. Caminiti, 71, of New Castle passed away the morning of February 3, 2015 at her residence. Born on December 16, 1943 in New Castle, she was the daughter of the late George and Mary Knox Duda. She is also preceded in death by her brother, Steve Duda and wife Helen, who raised her from a young age. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband, Joseph A. Caminiti, Sr., whom she married on June 19, 1965. Darlene graduated from St. Francis School of Nursing. After 44 years of work, she retired from her job as a nurse for St. Francis Hospital and Jameson Hospital. A lasting display of her love of helping others, she had been named St. Francis Hospital Employee of the Year and Employee of the Month. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. While she enjoyed visiting casinos, she also enjoyed playing cards with her family. She was an avid Steelers and Pirates fan. Even though she was the youngest in her family, Darlene was the matriarch of her family. Darlene’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Darlene is survived by her children, Joseph Caminiti, Jr. and wife Wendi of New Providence, NJ, Douglas G. Caminiti of New Castle, and Marc A. Caminiti and wife Diana of New Castle; brother, John Duda of New Castle; sisters, Emily Mrozek of New Castle and Bernadine Styla of Southgate, MI; nephews with whom she was raised, Eugene, Dennis, and Theodore Duda; nephew whom she raised, James Caminiti; grandchildren, Brett, Hannah, David, and Olivia; and several other nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Steve, George, Edward, and Martin Duda; sisters, Mary Presnar, Dorothy Raskowski, and Helen Rose Duda; and nephew, David Duda. Visitation will be held Friday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and from 7:00pm to 9:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home Saturday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Vitus Church at 10:00am, officiated by Father William Siple. Interment will take place at Parkside Cemetery.
Elizabeth Woods
Elizabeth L. Woods, 89, formerly of Brooklyn Ave, passed away the morning of February 4, 2015 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born on November 14, 1925 in New Castle, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Caroline Gettings Thompson. On June 17, 1944, she married her beloved husband, George W. Woods, and the two spent over 44 wonderful years together until he preceded her in death on May 14, 1989. Elizabeth’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. Elizabeth is survived by her daughter, Carol Brightshue and husband Vernon of New Castle; grandchildren, Jeffery Brightshue and Michael Brightshue and wife Dawn; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her brothers, William and Reginald Thompson. Visitation will be held Friday from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. Services will be conducted Friday at 1:00pm at the funeral home, conducted by Reverend Ron Mounts, pastor of Church of God. Interment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.
James Shuler
James C. Shuler, 56, of Sheridan Avenue, passed away the morning of February 3, 2015 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. He was born on January 21, 1959 in Warren, OH. He is survived by his mother, Ethel Jones Shuler of New Castle. James is also survived by his life partner, Mark Woolslayer of New Castle. James worked as a server and bartender for Luva Bella and also worked at the Marathon Gas Station. He enjoyed visiting Florida and golfing. A man who loved to make people happy, James will always be remembered as a loving partner, son, and brother who enjoyed life. James also is survived by his brother, David Shuler and wife Debbie of Edinburg, PA. Visitation will be held Tuesday, February 10, 2015, from 12:00pm to 1:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday at 1:00pm at the funeral home. The family asks that memorial contributions take the form of donations towards James’ final expenses.
