George E. Polansky, 81, of Hollow Rd, New Castle, went to be with the Lord on the evening of July 1, 2014 at Butler V.A. Born on December 22, 1932 in New Castle, he was a son of the late Steve and Stella Briggs Polansky. He had been married to the former Erma Pennington who passed away in March of 1989. He married the former Polly Ann Novotne on September 29, 1990. She survives. An Army veteran, he served during the Korean War during the Berlin airlift. Mr. Polansky had been with the New Castle Police Department for 26 years, retiring in 1983. He had been one of the first to have had and trained his police dog, Phyco. He had also worked on burglary detail and narcotics division for a time. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. He also received various awards, such as the American Legion Certificate of Commendation. Mr. Polansky enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. He faithfully attended the Park Gate Baptist Church. In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Steve Polansky of Tupelo, MS; a daughter, Stacy Richards and husband Richard of New Castle; two step-daughters, Tammy Novotne and husband Hatem Kaseb of Pittsburgh, PA and Jody Hawes and husband Andrew of Austin, TX; sisters, Eleanor Kerr and Jean Sherbak, both of New Castle; grandchildren, Brian Richards, Holly Richards, and Josiah Hawes; two step-grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter, AuBree Reeg. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Joe Polansky and Paul Polansky, and grandchild, Infant John Richards. Calling hours will be held Thursday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites Thursday at 7:00pm at the funeral home. Services will be conducted Saturday at 11:00am at Park Gate Baptist Church 2840 River Rd, Ellwood City, PA, officiated by Rev. David Childs, pastor of Park Gate Baptist Church. Carl Eugene Stitt, 63, of Edinburg, PA, passed away the morning of July 10, 2014 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital. Born on January 6, 1951, he is the son of the late Clare Elton and Jean Elizabeth Kennedy Stitt. Carl worked as a welder for Republic Steel. He was a member of the Pentecostal faith. A car enthusiast, he loved funny cars and working on cars. Carl is survived by his children, Richard Stitt, Michael Stitt, and Christopher Dottle, all of New Castle; longtime companion, Jackie Bunnell of New Castle; sister, Karen Mayberry of New Castle; niece, Melissa Langwasser; nephew, David Pounds; and three grandchildren. Douglas Weingartner
Douglas C. Weingartner, 60, of Ellwood Rd, passed away the evening of July 11, 2014 at his residence. Born on July 17, 1953 in Ellwood City, PA, he is the son of the late Harold (Paul) and Margaret Koch Weingartner. Surviving him at home is his beloved wife of 20 years, the former Jo-Ellen Clare, whom he married April 23, 1994. Douglas owned Paul’s Auto Body Shop in Ellwood City. A graduate of Lincoln High School, he also attended Ohio Northern University. A devoted member of Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church, Douglas served as an elder and deacon. Douglas also belonged to the Saxon Club in Ellwood City. In addition to his wife, Douglas is survived by his children, Trevor Douglas Weingartner of Cranberry Township, PA and Asia Ann Weingartner of Ellwood City, PA; brothers, Dave Weingartner of Mercer, PA and Duane Weingartner of Ellport, PA; and grandchildren, Haylee Ann Weingartner and Talon Douglas Green. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepson, Justin Elliott Burnett. No calling hours are planned. Justin E. Burnett, 29, of Ellwood Rd passed away the evening of July 11, 2014 at his residence. Born on November 13, 1984 in Charleston, WV, he is the son of Richard E. Burnett of New Galilee and Jo-Ellen Clare Weingartner of New Castle. Justin attended Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church. A Lawrence County Career and Technical Center graduate, he also attended Butler County Community College. He loved drawing and art and had enjoyed golf and bowling. Justin is survived by his parents. Saundra J. Shields, 69, of Rose Ave. passed away the evening of July 15, 2014 at North Hills Passavant Hospital. Born on August 14, 1944 in New Castle, she is the daughter of the late Samuel M. and Avis M. Shaw Robinson. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of 46 years, Garry E. Shields, whom she married on June 8, 1968. In her earlier years, Saundra worked as a baker for DeRosa’s Bakery. She belonged to the Third Presbyterian Church. In addition to her husband, Saundra is survived by her children, Dennis Shields and wife Jennifer of New Castle and Brad Shields and wife Tracy of Cranberry Township, PA; brothers, David Robinson and wife Martha of Ohio, Gary Robinson of Sharon, PA, Samuel Robinson and wife Lori of Edinburg, PA; aunt and uncle, Donna and Dale Shaw of New Castle; sister-in-law, Kathaleen Robinson; and grandchild, Zachary. Stephanie Naderinski
Stephanie (Sandy) Naderinski, 64, of N. Cascade St, passed away the evening of July 15, 2014 at her residence. Born on August 27, 1949 in New Castle, she was the daughter of Eleanor Donaldson Naderinski of New Castle and the late Edwin Naderinski. Sandy worked as a beautician at Town Mall Beauty Salon and as a crossing guard for Thaddeus Stevens School. An avid bowler, Sandy belonged to many different bowling leagues. She enjoyed playing bingo and the lottery. Sandy also loved being with her granddogs, Vida and Loca. In addition to her mother, Sandy is survived by her daughter, Koral Danger Shaffer of New Castle; brother, Joseph Naderinski of New Castle; sisters, Sharon Boughter and husband Merrill of New Castle, Eva Naderinski of Greenville, SC, and Diane Fleeger and husband Jimmy of New Castle; three nieces; and three nephews. She is also survived by the many people who thought of her as a second mom. In addition to her father, she is preceded in death by two infant sisters. Norman Gabriel
Norman G. Gabriel, 81, of New Castle passed away the evening of July 19, 2014 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on August 25, 1932, Norman was the son of the late George Ameen and Mary Saad Gabriel. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife, the former Marlene Joseph, whom he married on June 29, 1963. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Maronite Catholic Church. Norman retired after working for more than twenty five years as a decorator for Shenango Pottery. He had also worked for the China Cupboard Store of Shenango Pottery. Norman enjoyed watching sports, playing the horses, and was considered one of the best horse handicappers in the business. He loved music and played in various local bands. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and cherished the times he spent with his family. In addition to his wife, Marlene, he is survived by his three children, Dr. George Gabriel and his wife Lisa of Wexford; Norman Gabriel and his wife Rhonda and LeeAnn Gabriel, both of New Castle; three sisters, Lillian Medure and husband Sam; Donna Joseph; Genevieve Gabriel, all of New Castle; and four grandchildren, George C. Gabriel, Lauren Gabriel, Brianna Gabriel and Andrew Gabriel. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother, James, his sister, Sadie and his brother-in-law, George (Orgie) Joseph. Visitation is Tuesday from 4PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. A Service of Incense will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening at 7:30PM. Asaie (Ace) Welsh
Asaie A. (Ace) Welsh, 71, of New Castle passed away the evening of July 20, 2014 at Butler Memorial Hospital. Born in New Castle on March 15, 1943, he was the son of the late James P. and Laura Marshall Welsh. Surviving at home is his loving and devoted wife, the former Carol Pia Pfahles, whom he married on October 15, 1977. Ace was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam Era and retired from Shenango China. Ace enjoyed visiting casinos, classic cars and was handy at fixing many different things. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Steve Welsh, Michael Welsh, David Welsh, all of New Castle; step children, Cheryl Love and husband Fred, of Poland, OH; Jodi Elliott and husband Jim of Bensalem, PA; Fred Pfahles of New Castle; his brother, Charles Welsh of New Castle; his sister, Laurann Hawthorne of New Castle; twelve grandchildren and five step grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Beth Ann Clingensmith, sisters, Shirley Donahue, Alma Miller and his brothers, Leroy Welsh, Ted Welsh and Wesley Welsh. Arlene M. Romeo, 76, of New Castle passed away the evening of July 22, 2014 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on November 7, 1937 in Bessemer, PA, she is the daughter of the late Frank and Pauline Macek Likovich. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of 57 years, Vincent (Jim) Romeo, whom she married on June 15, 1957. Arlene retired from her job as a postal clerk for United States Postal Service in Transfer, PA. She was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church. A loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Arlene’s greatest joy came from spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, Arlene is survived by her children, Rod Romeo and wife Renee of Canfield, OH, James Romeo and wife Jonalyn of New Castle, Gary Romeo and wife Susan of Edinburg, PA, John Romeo of New Castle, Jodi Pallerino and husband Jeff of New Castle; brother, Arthur Likovich and wife Connie of Bessemer, PA; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Audrey Nixon-Foster
Audrey Nixon-Foster, 61, of New Castle passed away the afternoon of July 22, 2014 at St. John Specialty Care Center. Born on December 22, 1952 in New Castle, she is the daughter of Eddie Nixon of New Castle and the late Daisy Pryor Nixon. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of over 39 years, Willie Foster, whom she married on December 7, 1974. Audrey retired from teaching at the Youth Development Center of New Castle. She also previously taught at New Castle’s Rose Avenue School, Lawrence County Jail, and Cyber School. Audrey also was a librarian for the New Castle Library and Public Bookmobile. A graduate of Youngstown State University, she earned her Master’s degree in Education with a Reading Specialization. Audrey was a member of Ebenezer Church of God in Christ, the Quota Club, the Delta Sigma Theta sorority, and mentor for Diamond Girls. She also was a member and treasurer of Faith, Hope, and Charity, a lifetime member of NAACP, a former Girl Scout, and belonged to numerous other organizations. In addition to her father and husband, Audrey is survived by her children, Kenneth Foster and his companion Autumn Herbert of New Castle and Kendrah Foster of Pittsburgh, PA; brothers, Darrell Nixon of New Castle and Michael Nixon of Washington, PA; sisters, Annie Nixon, Leslie Hollins and husband Sam, Marlene Nixon, Michelle Krumm and husband Greg, all of New Castle, and Ernestine Morgan of Youngstown, OH; and grandchildren, Stormy Foster, DeVonte Foster, and Winter Grace. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her mother, she is preceded in death by her brothers, Edward, Albert, and Lionel Nixon, and sisters, Joan Nixon, Elizabeth Prioleau, and Beverly Nixon Perkins. Bonnette Gorham
Bonnette A. (Bonnie) Gorham, 69, of Pulaski, PA passed away the evening of July 24, 2014 at her residence. Born on March 26, 1945 in Pittsburgh, PA, she is the daughter of the late William and Cecelia Tuite Gorham. She is survived by her companion, Francis Phillips. Bonnette retired from her job working in assembly and manufacturing for IPEC. In her earlier years, she worked in assembly for H. J. Heinz in Pittsburgh, PA, and she also taught pre-school. A lover of music, Bonnette belonged to the Tri-State Country Music Association. She also enjoyed camping, bingo, and dancing, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family and friends. In addition to her companion, Bonnette is survived by her children, Craig Barnwell of Pulaski, PA, Karen Barnwell of Sharon, PA, and Jason Rocco of Ft. Westin, FL; brother, Bill Gorham,Sr. of Pittsburgh, PA; and grandchildren, Jordan Barnwell, Zackaray Gilbert, Harley Barnwell, and Destiny Barnwell. She is also survived by her large extended family who considered her a mom, grandma, and aunt. There are no calling hours planned. William Smart
William Smart, 82, of Pearson St passed away the morning of July 21, 2014 at his residence. Born on May 18, 1932 in Butler, PA, he was the son of the late Harlen and Mabel Crawford Smart. Also preceding him in death is his beloved wife, the former Margaret Donaldson, who passed away in 1998. William retired from his job as a laborer for Bessemer Cement Company. He was a member of the Wabash Bears Bowling League. An avid outdoorsman, William belonged to the Rod and Gun Club and the Coon and Fox Club and loved to take walks. William is survived by his children, Susan Romeo and husband Gary of Edinburg, PA, Eleanor Scheib and husband Eric of Garland, NC, William Smart, Jr. and wife Rose of Beaver, PA, and Randall Smart of Las Vegas, NV; brother, Donald Smart of Glendora, CA; sister, Doreen Cassidy of New Jersey; caregiver, Donna Haskin; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren. Kathleen Gangone
Kathleen A. Gangone, 71, of Ellwood Road passed away the evening of July 25, 2014 at her residence. She was born August 25, 1942 in New Castle and was the daughter of the late Edward and Clara DeCarbo Coletta. On June 6, 1970 she married her husband, Anthony Gangone, Sr. He preceded her in death May 1, 2006. Mrs. Gangone had worked for the New Castle Area School District in the cafeteria. She had also worked for and was a member of the Ladies of the Dukes. She enjoyed playing bingo and was a loving mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed by her family. Kathleen was a member of St. Vitus Church. She is survived by her two sons, Pete Gangone and wife Lori of New Castle and Anthony Gangone, Jr. and wife Jennifer of New Castle and two grandchildren, Anthony (Trey) and Sydney. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street. Rex Bruno
Rex L. Bruno, 65, of Old Youngstown Rd. passed away the morning of July 28, 2014 at his residence in Edinburg. Born in New Castle on July 9, 1949, Rex was the son of the late Frederick and Helen Davidson Bruno. Surviving at home is his loving wife, the former Melinda Villani, whom he married on September 27, 1969. Rex was a veteran of the United States Army and a member of St. Vitus Church. He was known as a dog lover. Rex was a loving and devoted husband, father and proud grandfather who was very close to his grandchildren. He will be sadly missed. In addition to his wife, Rex is survived by his four children, Mark Bruno and wife Michele of Orlando, FL; John Bruno of New Castle; Laurel Golonka and husband Michael of New Castle; Amanda Bruno Hairhoger of New Castle and his five grandchildren, Carl and Ethan Hairhoger, Christian and Jacob Bruno and Ian Golonka. Carolyn M. Wuenstel, 82, of W. Edison Ave passed away the morning of July 29, 2014 at Edison Manor. Born on February 3. 1932 in Pittsburgh, PA, she is the daughter of the late Louis and Caroline Threnhauser Schreiner. Also preceding her in death is her husband of over 20 years, the late Karl Wuenstel, whom she married in 1952. Carolyn was a member of St. Justin’s Roman Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, PA. Carolyn is survived by her children, Carolyn A. Wuenstel and husband James Mierzwiak of Monroe, MI, Dr. Mary Wuenstel of Pittsburgh, PA, and Carl Wuenstel and wife Kalyn of Washington, DC; grandchildren, Abigail Tuttle, Alex Tuttle, C.J. Wuenstel, Gwendolyn Wuenstel, Jay Wuenstel, and Karl Wuenstel; and great-grandchildren, Maxwell Haar and Lily Tuttle. Margaret Avery, 67, of N. Liberty St. passed away the morning of July 31, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on January 10, 1947 in New Castle, she is the daughter of the late Orin and Erma Houk Hollabaugh. Surviving her at home is her beloved husband of 49 years, Lawrence W. Avery, Sr, whom she married on February 27, 1965. Margaret was a member of the Salvation Army. She loved bingo and bowling, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. In addition to her husband, Margaret is survived by her children, Robert Foy, Lawrence Avery Jr. and wife Jamie, Cheryl Book and husband Doug, and Tonya Brest and husband Brian, all of New Castle; brother, Orie Hollabaugh of Port St. Lucie, FL; sisters, Jean Donnelly of Port St. Lucie, FL and Helen Francois of Austintown, OH; seven grandchildren; and six grandchildren. Edith Klush, 98, of New Castle passed away the afternoon of August 1, 2014 at Clen-Moore Place. Born on June 7, 1916 in New Castle, PA, she is the daughter of the late Thomas and Susan Johns Deep. Also preceding her in death is her beloved husband of 46 years, the late John Klush, whom she married on June 18, 1949. Edith retired from her job as a telephone operator for Shenango China. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Edith enjoyed music, dancing, swimming, and crocheting. Edith is survived by her sisters, Carol Prentice of Edinburg, PA and Delores Ligon of Yuma, AZ, and several nieces and nephews. Helen DeMartino
Helen A. DeMartino, 95, of W. Washington St passed away the morning of July 30, 2014 at Lawrence County Geri-Care. Born on May 24, 1919 in Bayonne, NJ, she is the daughter of the late Attanasio and Jennie Viccari Isolda. After 22 years of working, Helen retired in 1984 from her job as a secretary for New Castle Business Administration in City Hall. She attended First Assembly of God and belonged to Primetimers. Helen enjoyed sewing and volunteered at the City Rescue Mission. Known as Aunt Helen to everyone, she was a very giving and generous person who would do anything for anybody. Helen will be sadly missed and will always be remembered as a wonderful aunt. Helen is survived by her numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, and great-great-nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her five brothers and three sisters. Honoring her wishes, there will be no calling hours, and services were private.
Antonette Conti
A lifelong New Castle resident Antonette Conti, formerly of Grandview Avenue in Union Township, passed away August 1, 2014 on her 99th birthday. She was currently a resident of the Haven Convalescent Home where she had resided since November of 2009. Born on August 1, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Frances Mastropietro. She had been blessed with a wonderful marriage of 69 years to Charles D. Conti, whom she married on August 5, 1939. He preceded her in death on June 5, 2008. A graduate of New Castle High School Class of 1933, Antonette also worked as a seamstress at the National Pants Factory and then as a bookkeeper for the family business Conti Construction Company. A devout Catholic, she was a lifelong member of St. Vitus Church and instilled in her family a deep faith that allows them to believe she now resides with our Heavenly Father. As a member of St. Vitus Parish, she worked diligently at their many social functions and held office in the Christian Mothers organization. She also held office and was an active member in the Homemakers Club and the Oakwood Garden Club of Union Township. She knew and could name every flower in God’s garden. Antonette is survived by two daughters, two sons, and their spouses: Franceen and Mike Russo, Joan and Victor Son, Charles and Marianne Gumienny Conti, and Richard and Maureen Conti. In addition to her daughters and sons, she is survived by a loving sister-in-law, Ann Mastropietro, who was married to Antonette’s brother, Daniel, 14 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and several loving nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death, in addition to her parents and husband, were three brothers and their spouses, James and Helen Mastropietro, Daniel Mastropietro, and Domenick and Gloria Mastropietro. Our mother will be greatly missed and forever remembered for her kindness, love, and compassion shown to all who knew her. Never an unkind word left her lips and she always looked for the best in people. This prompted one special friend of hers, Pat Passerrello, to refer to her as St. Ann. The family will forever be indebted to the Haven Convalescent Home, Mark Tanner, his family, and their devoted staff for all of the love and compassion shown while our mother resided there. They made our mother and family a part of their family. Friends may call from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on Tuesday at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home Wednesday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Vitus Church, co-celebrated by Father Michael Ackerman and Father Frank Mitolo, cousin of Antonette. Interment will take place at St. Vitus Cemetery.
Margaret Cioppa
Margaret E. (Peggy) Cioppa, 82, formerly of Lutton St., lost a long and courageous battle with Parkinson ’s disease the afternoon of July 28, 2014 at the Jameson Care Center. Born in New Castle on November 25, 1931, Margaret was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Matteo Ezzo. Also preceding her in death on June 19, 2013, is her husband Michael J. Cioppa, whom she married on May 10, 1952. She was a lifelong devoted member of St. Vitus Church. Margaret was also a member of the church’s Christian Mothers and was an active volunteer for the church and St. Vitus School. Margaret was a homemaker and in earlier years had worked for Augustine’s Pizza. Margaret was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was also known locally for her beautiful singing voice. She will be sadly missed by her family and all who knew her. She is survived by her three children, Michael Cioppa and his wife Betty Ann of New Castle; Cynthia Pagliaroli of Hermitage; Amy Rich and her husband Ralph of Hubbard, OH; her two sisters, Carol Bethle and Janet Pratt, both of New Castle; and her five grandchildren, Christina Cioppa, Anna Marie Cioppa, Tony Pagliaroli, Ralph Rich and Andrew Rich. In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret is preceded in death by her sister, Betty Lozier. Visitation is Wednesday from 4PM to 7PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Thursday at 9:30AM for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM officiated by Rev. Frank Almade.
