Frank Lombardo

Frank M. Lombardo, 85, of N. Liberty St. passed away the morning of August 18, 2013 at the Edison Manor Rehabilitation Center.

Born in New Castle on March 1, 1928, Frank is the son of the late Michael S., Sr. and Elizabeth Domenick Lombardo.

Preceding him in death in 1982, is his first wife, the former Magdeline Okuzo. He is survived by his wife, the former Carol Cunningham whom he married on April 15, 1983.

Frank was a member of St. Vincent De Paul Parish. He retired from Sharon Steel Corporation where he worked as a roll grinder for forty two years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and picking mushrooms. Frank was known as the neighborhood handyman and was willingly to help out anyone.

In addition to his wife Carol, Frank is survived by his four children, Michelle Lombardo, Cody Lombardo, both of New Castle; Michael Lombardo of Florida; Louie Lombardo of Arizona; his brother, Michael Lombardo, Jr. and his wife Nellie, his sister, Catherine (Katie) Exposito, both of New Castle; and his two grandchildren, Michael and Jocelyn.

He is preceded in death by his parents, first wife, his daughter, Mary Ann Martin and his one brother, Louis B. Lombardo.

Visitation is Tuesday from 5PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St.

A Blessing Service will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday morning at 10AM officiated by Rev. Father Frank Almade.

Burial will take place at St. Lucy Cemetery.

Charles Jenkins

Charles D. Jenkins, 67, of E. Wallace Ave. passed away the morning of August 18, 2013 at Jameson Hospital.

Born in New Castle on August 10, 1946, Charles was the son of the late Charles and Hazel Schweikert Jenkins. Surviving at home is his wife, the former Mildred (Millie) Trott, whom he married on April 29, 1966.

Charles was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

He retired from Xaloy Incorporated where he worked as a chrome plater. Prior to that he had worked as a welder for Mesta Machine. Charles was a avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan and enjoyed spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Charles is survived by his daughter, Tracie Jones of New Castle; his brothers, Gary and Jon, his sister, Jennifer and two grandchildren, Jamie and Kelley.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Lorraine.

There are no calling hours and services are private.

Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery.

Charles’s family wishes to thank the Celtic Hospice Group and the West Penn Allegheny Oncology Network for the special care and compassion shown to him during his time of need.

James Barber

James H. Barber, 87, of Neal St. passed away the evening of August 20, 2013 at the Masonic Village in Sewickley, Pa. James was born in New Castle on May 24, 1926 and is the son of the late James and Josephine Dout Barber. Preceding him in death on October 16, 1987 is his wife, the former Carmelita Estelle Cassella whom he married on August 12, 1948.

James was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII. James was a devoted member of St. Vitus Church. He retired from Bessemer Cement where he worked as a coal mill operator. James was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid bowler, golfer and fisherman. James also enjoyed decorating for Christmas.

Surviving are his four children, Dr. James Barber and his wife Diane of Sewickley, Pa; Robert Barber and his wife Patricia of Knoxville, TN; Dr. Charles Barber and his wife Lori of Bridgeville, Pa; Laureen Lawrence and her husband George of New Castle; his two step-brothers, Paul Barber and George Barber, his step-sister, Mary Jane, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, James is preceded in death by his brother, William Barber.

Visitation is Friday from 3PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home on Saturday morning at 9:30AM for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM. Rev. Father William Siple of St. Vitus Church will officiate.

Interment will take place at St.Vitus Cemetery.

Kathryn McElroy

Former Pulaski, PA resident Kathryn W. McElroy, 95, of King Ave passed away the afternoon of August 21, 2013 at her residence. She was born on June 8, 1918 in Widnoon, PA to the late Alvie and Bertha McGregor Gray. On June 28, 1940, she married William J. McElroy who preceded her in death.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of New Castle. Kathryn loved being with her grandchildren and attending their various activities. She also enjoyed camping.

Kathryn is survived by her three daughters, Linda Jones of New Castle, Deborah Shoaff and husband Matthew of Pulaski Township, and Kathy Anderson and husband Mark of Clermont, FL; brother, Raymond Gray and wife Allene of Columbus, OH; sister, Frances Clark of Saxonburg; sister-in-law, Agnes Gray of East Brady, PA; seven grandchildren, Brandy Starkey, Kristen Voland, Joshua Shoaff, and Abby, Mark, Robert, and Lisa Anderson; two step-grandchildren, Matt Schoaff and Scott Schoaff and their families; three great-grandchildren, Addy, Brycen, and Cayden Starkey. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by her son-in-law, Donald Jones; two brothers, William Gray and Lloyd Gray; and four sisters, Mildred Gray, Geneva Musser, Virginia Minich, and Geraldine Rettig.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to the nurses of Jameson Hospice and Brenda for their loving care.

A visitation will be held on Saturday from 12Noon to 3PM at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Services will be held at 3PM on Saturday at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Larry Llewellyn of Hoover Heights Church. Interment will take place at Castleview Memorial Gardens.

Lori Fulvi

Lori Ann Fulvi, 50, of Warren Ave passed away the evening of Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at her residence. Born in New Castle on January 30, 1963, she was the daughter of James and Lucille Monaco Dailey who survive.

Lori taught elementary education for 18 years in the New Castle Area School District. Prior to this, she taught third grade in Yuma, Arizona. Lori graduated from New Castle High School in 1980, and then furthered her education obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Slippery Rock University.

Lori loved children and enjoyed her teaching position very much. She also liked working with computers, watching movies, going to Broadway plays and socializing with her friends. Her greatest pleasure was spending time with her granddaughter.

Besides her parents, Lori is survived by her children, Jay Fulvi and Vanessa Fulvi, and her granddaughter, Maleigha Gardner, all of New Castle. Lori is also survived by two sisters, Sharon Lewack of Columbus, Georgia and Jamie Boazzo and husband Jim of New Castle; one brother, Frank Dailey and wife Ann of Toledo, Ohio; and three nieces, Rachel Lewack, Deanna Dailey, and Ava Boazzo. Lori was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Edward and Barbara Dailey, and her maternal grandparents, Donato and Lucia Monaco.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2013 from 11AM to 2PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St.

Blessing services will be held on Saturday at 2PM at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Frank Almade of St. Vitus.

Freda Perillo

Freda V. Perillo, 79, of 505 Eighth Street passed away the afternoon of August 22, 2013 in Edison Manor.

She was born October 20, 1933 in Morgantown, WV and was the daughter of the late Stefano and Francesca Marcucci Antonelli. On May 19, 1984 she married her husband, the late Mario P. Perillo who preceded her in death September 6, 2007.

Mrs. Perillo in earlier years worked as an operator for AT&T. Later she worked as a nurse’s aide for several local nursing homes. She was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching and was a fan of New Castle sports teams, WVU Mountaineers and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Freda loved her family and the time spent with them, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish.

Mrs. Perillo is survived by three children, Chris Tsangaris and fiance Roberta Falba, Connie Bollinger and husband John and Cheryl Tsangaris all of New Castle; seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, Freda was preceded in death by two brothers, Demetrio Antonelli and Fred Antonelli and one sister, Vera Antonelli.

Visitation will be Sunday from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Monday for a mass of christian burial celebrated by Father Nicholas Vaskov at 10:00 AM at St. Vincent de Paul Church. Interment will be in St. Lucy Cemetery.

Delbert Rice

Delbert W. Rice, 90, of Hoover Rd passed away the evening of August 21, 2013 surrounded by his family at Jameson Memorial Hospital. He was born on July 20, 1923 to the late Oscar L. and Maida Mitcheltree Rice. In 1965, he married the former Madeline “Lana” Demofonte. She survives at home.

At the age of 19, Delbert served in the US Air Corps as a Lieutenant during WWII as a navigator and Radar observer. He later worked as an estimator and programmer for Aetna Standard in Ellwood City. He was a member of the Protestant faith. An avid golfer, Delbert was a member of Del Mar Golf Club of Ellwood City. He also was a former member of New Castle Eagles Club and Ellwood City Moose Club. Delbert was a kind, loving, and witty man who was always there to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He felt a deep respect and love for animals and his many pets over the years. Many of his golf buddies will remember him with his rescue dog, Muttley, who accompanied him on his golf cart at Del Mar for years.

In addition to his wife, Delbert is survived by his children, Donna Smarrelli and husband Joe of Neshannock Township, Cynthia Smith of New Castle, Terrance Rice and wife Florence of West Pittsburg, PA, Leslie Brady and husband John of Wisconsin, Tracy Johnson and husband Jeffery of West Pittsburg, PA, Delbert Rice and wife Deanna of Riverside, CA, and Billie Jo Bryant and husband Paul of Murrieta, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Helen Dripps Vuletich of Youngstown, OH; two grandsons, Joseph and Jonathan Smarrelli; nine additional grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews of Youngstown, OH. In addition to his parents, Delbert is preceded in death by his daughter, Lennis Rice; two brothers, John Rice and James Rice; and his sister, Mable Rice Veres.

Visitation will be held on Sunday from 4PM to 8PM at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd. Services will be held on Monday at 11AM at the funeral home, officiated by Rev. Dennis Bupp.

Interment will take place at Castleview Cemetery. The honor guard will perform military rites at the cemetery.

Thomas Houk

Thomas D. Houk, 69, of E. Meyer Ave, passed away the morning of August 24, 2013 at Jameson Care Center. He was born on March 24, 1944 in New Castle to the late John H. and Wilberta Boak Houk.

Thomas retired from his job at Ellwood Crankshaft and Machine in Hermitage, PA after working for them for ten years. He previously worked as a machinist for Rockwell International. He was a US Navy veteran, serving during the Vietnam Era. Thomas was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Eintracht Singing Society. He was also an avid golfer.

Thomas is survived by his sons, Stephen Houk and wife Erin of Norwich, CT and Justin Houk and wife Melissa of Brimfield, OH; brother, Conrad Houk of Franklin, PA; sister, Jane Braymer of Ellwood City, PA; and seven grandchildren.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 5PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 11AM at the funeral home, officiated by Pastor Thomas McCurdy of St. John’s Lutheran Church. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites at the funeral home.

Interment will take place at Slippery Rock Presbyterian Cemetery.

Lucille Cenname

Lucille Cenname, 85, of Highland Ave, passed away the evening of August 23, 2013 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. She was born on May 19, 1928 in New Castle to the late Peter and Antonette Skelly Cenname.

Lucille retired from her position as an assistant chemist for LTV Steel Corp’s Research Engineering Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA. She previously worked for Johnson Bronze and as a chemist for the Pittsburgh Testing Lab. She was a member of St. Vitus Church and A.A.R.P. An avid golfer, she played in and won many tournaments.

Lucille is survived by her nephew, Peter Cenname of New Castle, nieces, Anna Marie Cenname of New Castle and Corinne Calhoun of Diamond, OH, and several great nieces and great nephews. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Cenname, and sisters, Pearl Cenname; Marie Cenname; Madeline Teets; and Laura Munziak.

Visitation will be held Monday from 5PM to 7PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home 941 S Mill St. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10AM on Tuesday at St. Vitus Church, conducted by Father Nicholas Vaskov. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30AM.

Entombment will take place at Parkside Mausoleum.

Alfred Thomas

Alfred J. Thomas, 80, of Williams St. passed away the morning of August 27, 2013 at Jameson Hospital.

Born in New Castle on October 19, 1932, Alfred is the son of the late Gerwin, Sr. and Rose Nemeth Thomas. Surviving at home is his wife, the former Lucy Jean Chirumbolo, whom he married on September 7, 1957.

Alfred was a U. S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean Conflict as a boatswain’s mate 3rd class.

Alfred had worked as a machinist for Mesta Machine for nearly twenty years and then had worked for R&H Plumbing until his retirement. Alfred was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He enjoyed gardening, flea markets and spending time with his friends at McDonald’s. Alfred was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather and will be missed by all his friends and family.

In addition to his wife, Alfred is survived by his two children, Thomas Lee Thomas and his wife Debbie, John Alfred Thomas and his wife Carol, both of New Castle; his sister, Marilyn Senchak of New Castle; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Gerwin Thomas, Jr., James (Jay) Thomas and his sister, Anna Flemming.

Following his wishes, there are no calling hours. A private Blessing Service will be held at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S. Mill St. officiated by Rev. Father William Siple of St. Vitus Church. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military honors at the funeral home.

Burial will take place at St. Vitus Cemetery.

Judson “JT” Goode

Judson “JT” Goode, 83, of Bellaire Drive, New Castle passed away the morning of August 30, 2013 in Jameson Hospital.

He was born January 28, 1930 in LaGrange, GA and was the son of the late Fryson and Laura Ware Goode. He married the former, Emma Lee Jones in 1956. She preceded him in death August 19, 2004.

Mr. Goode retired as a sandblasting supervisor for a cemetery grave stone manufacturing company. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and especially enjoyed the time spent with his family. Judson attended Ebenezer Church of God in Christ.

Mr. Goode is survived by eight children, Bruce L. Jones of Troy, NY, Mary Emma Page and husband Andrew, Jr. of New Castle, Delores Young of Wheatland, Valerie Roberts of New Castle, Yvette Lawson of Aliquippa, Yolanda Lawson of Aliquippa, Eric Cleveland of Farrell and Sonja Watson of Farrell; sister, Lillie Mae Goode of LaGrange, GA; seventeen grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and seven great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, John Lee Jones; seven brothers; six sisters; grandson, Lashawn Goode; great granddaughter, Hope Goode and a close friend, Elvira Lawson.

There will be no calling hours and a service will be conducted on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street, New Castle. Pastor Bruce L. Jones, son of Mr. Goode will officiate.

Garry L. Funk, 57, of 28 E. North St. passed away the morning of August 31, 2013 at his residence.

Born in Parkersburg, W.V. on May 23, 1956, Garry was the son of the late Lewis Adam and Ruth Braham Funk. He is survived by his fiancee, Becky Lynn Champion of New Castle. Garry had worked as a laborer in the construction industry.

Rosetta DeAngelis

Rosetta P. DeAngelis, 93, of Neshannock Township passed away the morning of September 3, 2013.

Born in New Castle on September 30, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Anthony and Rose Cozza Cherby. She married Nick V. DeAngelis on May 25, 1946. He preceded her in death on April 10, 1998.

Rosetta graduated from New Castle High School in January 1939. In her earlier years, she worked at Johnson Bronze before her marriage. Rosetta also worked at Jameson Hospital in the Dietary Department for several years, Grants Department Store, and for the distribution department of the New Castle News.

Mrs. DeAngelis was a member of St. Camillus Church and was a former member of the Ladies Guild for any years. She was also a member of the Ladies of the Dukes. Rosetta was a very loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and cherished the holidays and time she spent with her family through her lifetime. She loved her family very much and often reminisced about her childhood and early adult life. Rosetta loved to travel with her late husband to Las Vegas, California, and Florida. She loved watching the Steelers and Pirates and attended two Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowls with her husband and son. In her free time, she loved baking, cooking, doing word puzzles, playing bingo, and playing the card game 500 Bid with her family.

She is survived by one daughter Patricia Staph and husband Guy of New Castle and one son Robert Nicholas DeAngelis of New Castle, with whom she made her home. Her family is complete with one grandson Christopher Staph Sr. and wife Laurie and two great grandsons, Christopher Jr. and Logan Joseph. She has always kept in close contact with several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five sisters: Mary Scarazzo, Amelia Scarazzo, Evelyn Scarazzo, Clara Tranquillo, and Rita Diana; and two brothers, Frank Cherby and Joseph Cherby.

Calling hours are Thursday from 10AM to 12Noon at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home & Crematory 3000 Wilmington Road.

A procession will leave the funeral home at 12PM For St. Camillus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30PM by Rev. Father Robert Miller, pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul Parish, Beaver, Pa.

Entombment will take place at Parkside Mausoleum.

Verna McGaffic

Verna Mae McGaffic, age 94 passed away August 30th at NHC Mauldin. She was born in New Castle, PA July 24, 1919 to Roy E. and Agnes McGaffic. She was pre-deceased by a brother, Roy E. McGaffic, Jr and a sister-in-law, Juanita L. McGaffic. She is survived by a niece Judith A. Bearden and her husband Robert, nephew David E. McGaffic and his wife Glenda, nephew John Humble, and niece Karen N. King and her husband Tim.

Verna Mae retired from Pennsylvania Power Company where she was employed as a secretary. During her employment she also was a dedicated caregiver to her parents. Once retired they moved to Holiday, Florida where she lived until 1989. After the death of her mother she moved to Greenville, SC to be with her only brother Roy. The joy of her life was her little dog “Baby”.

She was a member of Lee Road Baptist Church and a member of the Roy McGaffic Sunday School Class, as well as an active member of the Pelham Estates Garden Club.

Visitation was Sunday, September 1st at Lee Road Baptist Church in South Carolina from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. followed by the funeral at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be at Castleview Cemetery in New Castle.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to her caregiver Ginny Galloway, the Unit 2 staff at NHC Mauldin and the staff of Caris Healthcare. She loved all of you and appreciated everything you did for her.

Gary Gallonio

Gary J. Gallonio, 61, passed away the morning of September 6, 2013 at his residence.

He was born February 24, 1952 in New Castle and was the son of the late Joseph J. and Jean Latina Gallonio. He is survived by his wife, Sandy Huffman Sipe Gallonio, whom he married April 13, 1985.

In 1974 Mr. Gallonio graduated from Westminster College. He retired after 31 years of service from Jameson Hospital where he worked as a lab technician. He was a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Rapid Tappets and the New Castle Pistol Club. Gary was a classic car enthusiast and loved his pet parrots.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a sister, Patricia Cioffi of New Castle and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 3000 Wilmington Road. A service will be conducted by Pastor Paul Votaw on Tuesday at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Oak Park Cemetery.

Frank D. Kadunce, 45, of 26 N. Jefferson St. passed away September 7, 2013 at Jameson Hospital.

Born in New Castle on November 27, 1967, Frank is survived by his father, Webb Kadunce and his mother, Iris Allen Grandey, both of New Castle. Also surviving at home is his wife, the former Janene Baumgartner whom he married on July 11, 2008.

He had formerly worked as a truck driver for TC Redi Mix. Frank enjoyed fishing and NASCAR.

In addition to his parents and wife, Frank is survived by his children, Elijah Kadunce and Elizabeth Kadunce, both of Blairsville, GA; his step-children, Leslie Birdsall and Ashley Allen, both of New Castle; his sisters, Kim Lyons of New Castle; Carrie Grandey of New Castle; Heidi Overton of Alberton, GA; his mother-in-law, Kay Baumgartner of New Castle and his two grandchildren, Alexandra Birdsall and Logan Pimm.

He is preceded in death by his father in-law, Louis Baumgartner.

Antoinette Granato

Antoinette E. Granato, 94, of Golden Hill Nursing Home, formerly of Butler Ave. passed away the evening of September 9, 2013 at Jameson Hospital.

Born in New Castle on September 15, 1918, Antoinette was the daughter of the late Vincent and Onorina Russo Pecoraro. Also preceding her in death on October 7, 1968 is her husband, Frank Granato, Sr. whom she married on November 30, 1943.

She was a member of St. Vitus Church. Antoinette retired as a pizza maker from Augustine’s Italian Village where she worked for many years. She enjoyed music and cherished the times she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Antoinette is survived by her children, Ronald Granato and his wife Joyce of Columbiana, OH; Stephen Granato and his wife Mary Kay of Mars, PA; Maria Opp and her husband Doug of New Castle; daughter-in-law, Suzy Granato of Carmel, IN; sister-in-law, Rosemarie Nero of New Castle; seven grandchildren, Brian Opp and wife Rita, Dana Faulkner and husband Kevin, Michael Granato and wife Danitsa, Bryan Granato, Sera Granato, Kathy Herman and husband Steve, Bill Ross and his wife Lezlee; three great-grandchildren, Adam, Carli and Mason and her loving and caring niece and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, Antoinette is preceded in death by her son, Frank Granato, Jr., and two sisters, Dorothea J. DiGiorgi and Maria Pecoraro.

Visitation is Thursday from 5PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 3000 Wilmington Rd.

A procession will leave the funeral home on Friday at 9:30AM for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10AM officiated by Rev. Father Nicholas Vaskov.

Burial will take place at St. Vitus Cemetery.

Maria Pasqualina Reino, 83, of Basilone Drive passed away the morning of September 12, 2013 at her residence.

She was born October 6, 1929 in SanBartolomeo In Galdo, Italy and was the daughter of the late Raffaele and Lucia D’Andrea Colatruglio. She is survived by her husband, Matteo Reino whom she married January 17, 1949. On March 9, 1966, Maria came to the United States of America with her family.

Mrs. Reino was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother who loved getting everyone together and spending time with her family. Maria was a member of St. Vitus Church.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by three sons, Salvatore Reino and wife Carmina, Raffaele Reino and wife Patriciann and Antonio Reino and wife Antoinette all of New Castle; two sisters, Donatina Circelli of New Castle and Giovannina Mediate of Mt. Jackson, OH; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Pietrangelo Colatruglio and a sister, Maria Circelli.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, 941 S. Mill Street. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30 AM on Monday for a mass of christian burial at 10:00 AM at St. Vitus Church, celebrated by Father Frank Almade, pastor. Interment will be in St. Vitus Cemetery.

Joseph A. Elko, 86, of Balph Ave, passed away the evening of September 14, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was born on March 20, 1927 in New Castle to the late Andrew and Anna Staransky Elko. On Dec 5, 1978, he married the former Pauline Romanio who survives at home.

Joseph worked and retired as a meat cutter for A&P Supermarket. He was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Parish Church and a former member of St. Michaels Church. Serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he earned several medals while on tour, including the Good Conduct Medal, Expert Rifleman Medal, Occupation Forces Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Red Ribbon Medal, and Combat Rifleman Medal. Joseph also belonged to the Slovak Club, Knights of Columbus Council #512, and American Legion Post #343. Aside from being known as an avid Pirates fan, he was also known for his homemade kielbasi. His greatest joy came from spending time with his family.

In addition to his wife, Joseph is survived by his daughter Judy Gaus and husband Karl of New Castle, and grandchildren, Joe Gaus and fiancée Sara Phipps and Paula Gaus. He is also survived by his nieces, Betty Berkely and Kathy Kidwell and husband Don; nephews, Dr. Joseph Berkely and wife Dr. Marilyn Berkely and John Berkely; and great nephew, Dr. Chris Berkely. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his sister, Helen Berkely, and an infant brother.

Visitation will be held on Monday from 4PM to 8PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will perform military rites on Monday at 7:45PM at the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10AM on Tuesday at St. Vincent DePaul Church, officiated by Father William Siple. A procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30AM.

Interment will take place in the Veterans section at Parkside Cemetery.
