Rosemarie Macri, 70, of Katherine Drive, Bessemer passed away the evening of November 27, 2012 in Jameson Hospital. She was born October 14, 1942 in Brooklyn, NY and was the daughter of the late Rocco and Theresa Ieraci. She was married to the late Vincent J. Macri who preceded her in death May 28, 2007. Mrs. Macri retired from the New Castle Transit Authority where she worked in housekeeping. She was a member of Christ the King Parish. Rosemarie enjoyed cooking and crafts. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandson, Anthony. She is survived by a daughter, Christine Sutton of Bessemer; a son, Richard Macri of Bessemer; three sisters, Josephine Coletta of Long Island, NY, Catherine DiMartini of Brooklyn, NY and Annie Scalabrino of South Carolina and a grandson, Anthony Sylvester. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street. Virginia T. Gearin, 100, of New Castle passed away the evening of November 28, 2012 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Virginia was born on December 13, 1911 in Youngstown, OH to the late William C. and Jennie Baldwin Allen. She was married for 67 years to the love of her life Charles (Jake) W. Gearin who passed on February 3, 2010. Virginia was a homemaker who took pride in being a loving wife, mother and grandmother and was known by all as a wonderful, caring and generous person. She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church. Virginia is survived by a daughter Patricia A. and husband Don Columbus of New Castle; two grandchildren, Christine and husband Jon Moon and Todd Columbus; two great-grandchildren, Jacob Beck and Jarek Moon. In addition to her parents and husband, Charles, Virginia is preceded in death by a brother, Robert Allen, sisters Vera George and Delores Lockley and an infant sister Mary Elizabeth Allen. Audrey Veltre
Audrey J. Veltre of 2304 Adella Street passed away the morning of November 29, 2012 in Jameson Hospital. Born in Uniontown, PA, she was the daughter of the late John and Mary Collingwood Augustine. On July 4, 1989 she was preceded in death by her husband, the late Eugene Veltre. Mrs. Veltre was a homemaker. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed crocheting. She was the coach for the Eagles Junior Bowling Program for twenty-eight years and was inducted into the Lawrence County Bowling Hall of Fame. Her greatest joy was the time spent with family and friends. Audrey is survived by two sons, Jerry Veltre and wife Janice of New Alexandria and John Veltre and wife Udora of New Castle; brother, Edward Augustine of Youngstown, OH; sister, Charlotte McCoy of New Castle; four grandchildren, Tia Veltre, Michael Melenka, Johna Veltre and John E. Veltre and a great grandchild, Brielle Melenka. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John and James Augustine and one sister, Janet Cochran. There will be no calling hours and a private service will be held at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street conducted by Rev. Richard Nero at a later date. Interment will be in St. Joseph Cemetery.
John Penwell
John D. Penwell, 60, of Penwell Lane, Hillsville passed away the morning of December 2, 2012 in UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Pittsburgh. He was born July 1, 1952 in New Castle and was the son of John K. and Mary Margaret Taylor Penwell. His father preceded him in death and his mother survives in New Castle. He is survived by his wife, the former Kathleen Pezzulo whom he married August 24, 1973. Mr. Penwell retired from Essroc, formerly Carbon Limestone where he worked as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Christ the King Parish and a member of the former St. Lucy Club. John was an avid hunter and fisherman and a member of the Mahoning Sportman’s Club, the Coon and Fox Hunting Club and the Johnson Club. He was a huge fan of the New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved and cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren. In addition to his mother and wife, he is survived by a son, Jonathan Penwell and fiance Heather Moore of Pulaski; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Roy Erwin of Ocean City, MD; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Marlene and Dr. Daniel D’Amato; brother-in-law, Charles Pezzulo; two grandchildren, Brayden Penwell and Brianna Penwell; four step-grandchildren, Samantha and husband Pedro, Camrynn, Cadan and Hunter and is also survived by several nieces, nephews and godchildren. Fred Regna
Fred Regna, 80, of Lathrop Street passed away the afternoon of December 2, 2012 at his residence. He was born October 4, 1932 in New Castle to the late Luigi and Clara LaVilla Regna. He is survived by his wife, the former Barbara DeAugustine whom he married October 6, 1956. Mr. Regna retired after 30 years from Elliott Steel where he worked as a roller. He was a United States Navy veteran serving from 1950-1954. He served during the Korean War Era on the USS Salem. He enjoyed the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, gardening and sports. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and loved the time spent with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Steven Regna and wife Paula, Cheryl Myers and husband James and Louis Regna all of New Castle; five grandchildren, Hannah Davis and husband Mike, Brad Palmer, Jr., Louis Regna, Jr., Janelle Jones and Alonzo Regna and one great-grandchild, Gianna Regna. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Theresa Regna and Elizabeth Regna and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Steve and Elizabeth DeAugustine. Diane Baka
Diane J. Baka, 69, of Center Church Rd. passed away the evening of December 3, 2012 at her residence. Born in New Castle on June 27, 1943, Diane is the daughter of the late Russell H. and Naomi L. Steele Myers. Surviving is her husband, Michael E. Baka, who she married on September 29, 1962. Diane was a member and deacon of Slippery Rock Presbyterian Church. She had worked as a secretary for George’s Auto Electric. In earlier years, she had worked for Haney’s Furniture and prior to that, Matthews Conveyor Company. She enjoyed flower gardening, taking painting classes and spending time with friends at her card club. Diane loved spending time with her family and especially cherished the times spent with her grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Diane is survived by her two sons, Michael J. Baka and his wife Christina, Mark E. Baka and his wife Vickie, both of New Castle; her brother, Joe Myers and wife Sheila of New Castle and her four grandchildren, Matthew, Sean, Mikayla and Blake. Salvatore Colundrello
Wampum resident, Salvatore (Sam) Colundrello, Sr., 86, of Kay St. passed away the morning of December 6, 2012 at Jameson Hospital. Born in Ellwood City on May 3, 1926, Sam was the son of the late Anthony and Angeline Parillo Colundrello. Surviving at home is his wife of sixty three years, the former Viola Seaburn who he married on December 3, 1949. Sam was a veteran of the US Navy and served during WWII. He was retired from Medusa Cement where he worked as a repairman for forty years. Sam was a member of the American Legion Post 749 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by three children, seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by one son, one brother and two sisters. There are no calling hours or services.
Frances Maxwell
Frances Dorothy Maxwell, 79, formerly of Hillcrest Ave., passed away the morning of December 6, 2012 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born in New Castle on May 9, 1933, Frances was the daughter of the late Anthony and Frances Marcella Viggiano. Preceding her in death on December 21, 2010 is her husband, Kenneth Charles (Tick) Maxwell, who she married on July 5, 1958. Frances was a avid reader and over the years wrote many letters to her family. She enjoyed politics and was the number one fan of our 42nd President, William J. Clinton. She was a dedicated homemaker, loving wife, mother and doting grandmother and cherished the times she spent with all her family. She is survived by her son, Patrick Maxwell and his wife Diane of Pittsburgh and her granddaughter, Caroline Maxwell. In addition to her parents and husband, Frances is preceded in death by three brothers, Patsy Farone, John Ruttuno, Joseph Ruttuno and five sisters, Phyllis Longo, Josephine Conti, Mary Ann Viggiano, Mary Puzzuoli and Sandra Colelli. Louise A. Stone, 92, of Croton Ave. passed away the evening of December 5, 2012 at the Haven Convalescent Home. Born in New Castle on February 10, 1920, Louise was the daughter of the late Floyd and Orlanda Mancini Mancino. She was a member of St. Vitus Church. In earlier years, Louise worked at Shenango China as a decorator. Louise cherished the times she spent with her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her former husband, Charles “Chum” Stone, her son, Gary Stone and wife Carol of New Castle; one sister, Mary DiMuccio of New Castle; two grandchildren, Gary Stone and wife Annlyn, Erin Stone, three step-grandchildren, Louie Voto, Tara Voto, Juliann Holmes, six great-grandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Louise is preceded in death by one brother, William Mancino and one sister, Margaret Carpenter. Selma Joseph, 83, of 318 Rhodes Place passed away the afternoon of December 5, 2012 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Kensington, Pa. on February 19, 1929, Selma was the daughter of the late Charles and Fudda Swad Joseph. She was a member of St. Elias Orthodox Church. Selma cherished the times she spent with her family, nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sister, Minnie Maravola of Youngstown, Ohio and several nieces, nephews and their families. In addition to her parents, Selma is preceded in death by four brothers, Albert Joseph, James Joseph, Charles Joseph, Michael Gazelle, four sisters, Martha Toney, Sarah Miller, Bessie Ivan and Mary Whitehead. Angeline Govojdean, 87, of West Pittsburg, Pa. passed away the morning of December 7, 2012 at Jameson Hospital. Born in New Castle on June 13, 1925, Angeline was the daughter of the late Joseph and Philomena Carangie Camerot. Surviving at home is her husband, John S. Govojdean who she married on August 11, 1951. Angeline was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Parish. She was also a member of the Christian Mothers of the former Holy Cross Church. In earlier years Angeline worked as a decorator for Shenango China. She was the past president of West Pittsburg PTA. She enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her friends. Angeline cherished the time she spent with her family and grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Angeline is survived by three children, Phyllis Stachowiak and her husband Blaine of West Pittsburg; JoAnn Woods and husband Norman of New Middletown, Oh; Marlene Damrow of Akron, Oh; three brothers, Jack Camerot, Benard Camerot, Joseph Camerot, all of West Pittsburg; two sisters, Carmella Bokros of Struthers, Oh; Maryann Jones of West Pittsburg; eight grandchildren, Mandy Stachowiak and Brittany Stachowiak, Gina Govojdean, Jessica Woods, Beth Woods, John Woods, Charles McDevitt, Jennifer (Mike) McDevitt and two great-grandchildren, Skyler Smith and Giovonni Mangino. Lenore H. Fassinger, 74, of 3451 Tuscarora Dr. New Castle, passed away Saturday evening, December 8, 2012 at UPMC Shadyside Hospital. Born in Dravosburg, Pa. on June 16, 1938, Lenore was the daughter of the late James A. and Margaret L. Smith Hodder. Surviving at home is her husband, Dr. John J. Fassinger, who she married on October 25, 1964. Lenore was a member of Clen Moore Presbyterian Church. She was a 1956 alumni of McKeesport High School and was a 1959 graduate of St. Joseph School of Nursing. In 1962, Lenore became certified as an nurse anesthetist, working for UPMC Presbyterian Hospital and St. Francis Hospital in New Castle. She then became the owner and operator of the Little Shoppe Women’s Boutique in New Castle for over twenty years. She was a long time member of the New Castle Country Club and was a avid golfer at the club. Active in her community, Lenore was a former chairperson of the St. Francis Holly Ball, a board member of Jameson Hospital, a former board member of the Easter Seals and a member of the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts. Lenore was a avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan. In addition to her husband, Lenore is survived by her two children, Holly A. Poniewaz and her husband Michael of Las Vegas,NV; John J. Fassinger, II of New Castle; her sisters, Dorothy H. Shuette of Dravosburg, Pa; Myrna Brown of Chesterton, IN; her beloved grandchildren, Gracen Layne Poniewaz, Logan James Poniewaz and her nieces and nephews. Jean Ezzo
Jean C. Ezzo, 101, formerly of Rhodes Place passed away the morning of December 10, 2012 at the Jameson Care Center. Born on June 22, 1911 in New Castle, Jean was the daughter of the late Philip and Philomena Ventresca Lostracco. Preceding her in death on December 6, 1978 is her husband Harry A. Ezzo, Sr. who she married on August 20, 1931. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish, it’s Christian Mothers and the Holy Rosary Sodality. In earlier years, Jean worked as a sales clerk for Strouss-Hirshberg Department Store for fifteen years. Prior to that she had worked at the Box Factory during WWII. Jean was a member of the St. Margaret’s Society. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family. Jean also enjoyed traveling several times to Italy, going to the Rivers Casino, playing bingo and crocheting. Jean was known as a loving and doting wife, mother and grandmother who was named Mother of the Year in 1970 by the Columbus Club Auxiliary. She cherished the time spent with her family and friends and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. Survivors include her daughter, Loretta Ann Sharek and her husband Alex of New Castle; her son, Harry Ezzo, Jr. and his wife Sue of Strongsville, Oh; her son-in-law, Sam Cepro of New Castle; her eight grandchildren, Brenda Long and husband Terry, Colleen Ezzo, Todd Ezzo and wife Bobbi, Keith Ezzo and wife Lois, Sam Cepro, Jr and wife Linda, Cheryl Houk and husband Doug, Lisa Nocera and husband Carmen, Lori Smith and husband Ronnie, eightteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Robert L. Stuckey, 80, of Main St. Mineral Ridge, Ohio passed away the evening of December 9, 2012 at the Essex of Salem II. Born in Butler, Pa. on May 28, 1932, Robert was the son of the late Joseph and Mildred Kaltenbaugh Stuckey. Surviving is his spouse, the former Betty Jane Martin, who he married on June 7, 1997. He was a member of the Church of Genesis. Robert was an avid sports fan. He is survived by is wife, one brother, Ralph Stuckey of New Waterford, Oh; three sisters, Alice Mertz of New Port Ritchie, Fl; Ethel Sipe of Duneden, Fl; Shirley Sweringen of Jacksonville, Fl; and a number of nieces and nephews. Valentino Carkitto, 82, passed away the morning of December 11, 2012 at his residence in New Castle. Born in New Castle on May 21, 1930, he was the son of the late Giovanni and Antonia DiMasi Carkitto. Preceding him in death on October 30, 1996 is his wife, the former Jean Shornack who he married July 30, 1950. He was a veteran of the US Army serving in Germany during the Korean War Era. Valentino retired as a self-employed auto mechanic. He had also worked as a salesman for Cummings and Bricker Farm Equipment. He is survived by two daughters, Chris LaCivita and husband Anthony of New Castle; Linda Banko of New Castle; two sons, John Carkitto and wife Melissa of Rock Hill, SC; Michael Carkitto and wife Jill of Long Valley, NJ; one brother, Lou Carkitto of New Castle; three sisters, Stella Richards of New Castle; Yolanda DiRaimo of Erie, Pa; Joanne Candiello of Cranberry, Pa and five grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, Valentino is preceded in death by one sister, Mary DiMuccio. Glenna Lowry Wimer
Former New Castle resident, Glenna Lowry Wimer, 95, died Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the Kings Retirement Community in Martinsville, Virginia. Born in Zelienople, Pa. on June 3, 1917, Glenna was a daughter of the late Robert F. and Martha G. Lowry. Glenna was married to George W. Wimer who preceded her in death in 1959. She was a registered nurse and teacher at the Jamison School of Nursing in New Castle. Survivors include one son, Gary L. Wimer and wife Judy of Danville, VA; one brother, Paul G. Lowry of Kissimmee, Fl; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, Glenna was preceded in death by one son, Scotty L. Wimer, two sisters, Dorothy McKim, Hannah Lowry and her brother, Robert Lowry. A Memorial Service will be conducted on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 2PM at the Kings Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Mary C. Liverani, 89, of 1123 Motor Street passed away the morning of December 13, 2012 in Jameson Care Center. She was born December 18, 1922 in New Castle and was the daughter of the late Pasquale and Margaret Lombardo DeLuca. In 1947 she married her husband, the late Edward Liverani who preceded her in death April 1, 1981. Mrs. Liverani retired from Kmart where she started as a clerk and retired as a supervisor. In earlier years she worked for Shenango China. She was a member of St. Vitus Church, a former lector for the church and Sunday school teacher. Mary was a wonderful cook and very family oriented. She was known to all who knew her as someone people could turn to for anything they needed. She is survived by her son, Edward (Tom) Liverani of New Castle and five sisters, Flora Ambrose, Stella Valentino, Norma Ferrare, Rose Pelini and Alba Nativio all of New Castle. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Marguerite R. Liverani; one brother, Anthony DeLuca and three sisters, Florence Cutlip, Edna Christofer and Fernanda Leone. Nick Allegro
Nick Allegro, Sr., 86, of New Castle, PA and Bethel Park, PA passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2012 at Golden Living Nursing Home in Mt. Lebanon, PA after an extended illness. He was born August 22, 1926 in New Castle, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Allegro. He was married for 56 years to the late Christine (DelSignore) Allegro. Mr. Allegro was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Church and its Holy Name Society. He was very active at church most of his life doing whatever was needed, from calling bingo to building booths for the bazaar. He was a US Army Intelligence Officer during World War II, and retired from Rockwell’s Axle Division after 40 years of work. He enjoyed coaching and attending softball and baseball games for his children and grandchildren, and was an avid Pirates and Steelers fan. Nick lived with his daughter’s family after his wife passed in 2007 and then in assisted living for the last few months. He was the kind of man who would do anything to help anyone at anytime, and will be dearly missed by many whose lives he touched. Heartfelt thanks to Debbie and the Asera Care hospice team, and the staffs of Mt. Lebanon Golden Living and Washington Commons, for their compassion, care and assistance. Nick is survived by his daughter, Susan Trozzo and her husband William of Bethel Park, PA; son, Nick Allegro, Jr. of New Castle; brother, Anthony (Pooch) Allegro and his wife Dolly; sister-in-law, Alice Merolillo of New Castle; grandchildren: Shannon, Stephanie, Christina and Sally, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Lynda Emery; two brothers, Tom and Merle Allegro, and three sisters, Mary Dudek, Annie Fragle and Rose Papa. Visitation will be Saturday, December 15, 2012 from 6:00-8:00 PM and Sunday, December 16, 2012 from 2:00-4:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street, New Castle. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, December 17, 2012 at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph the Worker Church, 1111 South Cascade Street, New Castle. A procession will leave the funeral home at 1:30 PM for church. Reverend Father James Downs will officiate. Interment will be in Parkside Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the New Castle Area Honor Guard on Sunday at 3:45 PM at the fuenral home.
Elizabeth Ann Landers
Elizabeth Ann Landers, 80 of Harlansburg Road, Slippery Rock passed away the evening of December 13, 2012 in St. John Specialty Care Center, Mars, PA. She was born January 15, 1932 in Columbus, OH and was the daughter of the late Paul and Mabel Wilcox Ritchie. She was preceded in death on August 3, 1998 by her husband, the late Robert Landers. Mrs. Landers was a homemaker. She was a former member of the Tri-State Country Music Association. Elizabeth Ann is survived by four daughters, Donna Moschella of Edinburg, Doris Hughes and husband Bill of Slippery Rock, Terri Panella and husband Anthony of New Castle and Darlene Rucinski of New Castle; son, Albert Piatt of Texas; brother, James Ritchie of New Castle; sister, Luella Morford of Hermitage; fifteen grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Frank Ritchie, William Ritchie, Robert Ritchie, Daniel Ritchie and Ernest Wilcox. Visitation will be Monday from 5:00-7:00 PM at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory, Inc., 941 S. Mill Street. A service will be conducted by Reverend Dennis Bupp on Monday at 7:00 PM at the funeral home. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Henry Metz
Henry A. Metz, 91, of Church Alley, New Castle passed away the evening of December 13, 2012 in Silver Oaks Nursing Center. He was born December 5, 1921 in Distant, PA and was the son of the late Peter C. and Maggie Downing Metz. He was preceded in death on January 6, 1994 by his wife, the former Gay L. Shanafelt. They were married on July 9, 1945. Mr. Metz retired from US Steel Corp where he worked as a burner. He was a United States Army veteran and served during World War II. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing. He was a member of the Elks Lodge. He is survived by three sons, Michael Metz of New Castle, Phillip Metz of Youngstown and Dan Metz of Bradenton, FL; one daughter, Joy Mislevy and husband Larry of Canton, MI; one brother, Rosco Metz of Duquesne; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one son, David Metz; three brothers, Charles Metz, James W. Metz and Floyd Metz and three sisters, Bess Johnson, Mae Johnson and Helen Davis. There will be no calling hours and services are private.
