Albert Herman, 86, of New Castle passed away the morning of July 28, 2014, at the Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born December 9, 1927 in the Bronx, New York he was the son of Isadore and Pauline Herman. Preceding him in death was his wife of 56 years the former Sandra Hirschman of Manhattan. They were married on May 29, 1949 at the Temple Siani in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from James Monroe High School in 1946 and then served in the United States Army during the occupation of Germany where he advanced to the rank of Corporal. Upon returning to New York he received a United States War Service Scholarship and received a Bachelors of Science in Economics from Long Island University in 1950. He pursued graduate studies at New York University and worked on the Training Squad at Gimbels Department Store in New York City where he rose to the position of buyer. He held a number of executive positions in retailing in: Toledo, Ohio; Dubuque, Iowa; Oakland, California; Amarillo, Texas; and Albuquerque, New Mexico. In 1968 he became the Home Furnishings Merchandise Manager for the entire Stone & Thomas Department Store Chain based in Wheeling, West Virginia where he ultimately became Corporate Vice President. He oversaw the modernization and expansion of the chain and was responsible for the business acquiring a strong regional reputation. Due to his quick wit and sense of humor he achieved almost legendary status in retailing in the 1970s. He was a world traveler with wife Sandra and made numerous trips throughout Europe. In 1978 he took an executive position with the May Company in Cleveland. After his retirement he worked with his wife Sandra as a sales representative for Angelo American Eye-ware. Herman was passionate about the environment and was active in numerous organizations championing animal rights and conservation. He was also an active and dedicated squash enthusiast and a connoisseur of fine oriental cuisine. After the death of his wife Sandra in 2006 he moved to New Castle to be with his son’s family where he was a constant source of inspiration. Herman is survived by his son, Attorney Daniel Herman of New Castle (and his spouse, Attorney Louise A. Geer), his daughter, a retired schoolteacher, Carole Lyn Herman, also of New Castle, his granddaughter Eileen Sabrina Herman, and his sister Edith Turner of the Bronx, New York.
