Samuel Bonfield

Samuel W. Bonfield, 88, of New Castle passed away on December 20, 2013 at Select Services at St. Joseph Hospital in Warren, OH.

He was born on December 18, 1925 to the late Nunzio and Angeline Bonfield. He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bernice (Pittochi) Bonfield; two sons, Nunzie Bonfield and wife Carol Ann of New Castle and Sammy Bonfield Jr of Pompano Beach, FL; and granddaughter and the love of his life, Erin. He is also survived by his brothers, Frank Bonfield and wife Alice of New Castle; former daughter-in-law, Paula Bonfield of New Castle; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Hambelton and Stephanie McCandless; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, John and Joseph Bonfield; sister, Margaret Dellio; and nephews, Ronnie Bonfield and Jerry Lombardo.

Sam graduated from New Castle High School in the Class of 1944. He was a World War II veteran, serving his country from 1944 to 1946 and received many combat honors. Samuel was a sergeant in the Army and served in the European Theater in Italy. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Award, World War II Victory Ribbon, and Army Occupation Medal(Italy).Before he retired from Penn Power, he worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube and Shenango Pottery from 1947 to 1952 and Elliott Steel from 1952 to 1974. Sam was also a long time dedicated member of New Castle Honor Guard, a committee member of the Croton Honor Roll, and a member of St. Vitus Church. He loved gardening, growing vegetables and flowers. Sam was known for being a great neighbor who would help everyone.

Visitation will be held Monday from 4pm to 8pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Tuesday at St. Vitus Church at 10am, officiated by Father William Siple, and a procession will leave the funeral home at 9:30am.

Interment will take place at Parkside Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct full military rites.
