Frank A. “HAM” Thomas, 91, formerly of Summit Street, passed away the morning of March 29, 2015 at Golden Hill Nursing Home. Born on February 9, 1924 in New Castle, he was the son of the late Columbus and Philomena Circelli Thomas. On June 27, 1953, he married his beloved wife, the former Anna G. Conti, and the two spent over 37 years together until she preceded him in death on October 11, 1990. After 44 years, Frank retired from the warehouse and shipping department for Shenango China. He was a 1942 graduate of New Castle High School. He also served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Shenango China Federal Credit Union for more than 65 years and served as a former president for over 30 years. Frank attended many Lawrence and Mercer Counties Chapter functions and state conventions. He was also involved with the financial section of United Steelworkers of America Local 3125. Actively involved in pensions, worker safety, and labor/management relations, Frank attended six international conventions and many District 20 and state conferences. He was also a member of the Duca Degli Abruzzi Society for over 60 years. He also served as an officer of the Croton Dukes Club for many years and was very proud to help rebuild the club after the Thanksgiving Day fire in 1991. A devout member of St. Vitus Church, Frank served as an officer of the Holy Name Society for several years and was named Holy Name Father of the Year in 1991. He also served on the board for fundraising and union involvement for many local branches of charities, such as the YMCA and United Way. Also an active golfer, Frank attended in several US Opens at Oakmont. He also attended the US Open in Bethpage, NY in 2002 and several Senior Opens in Laurel Valley, Quicksilver, and Jericho, NY. Known for his knowledge, integrity, and honesty, Frank “handled the money” for many organizations, golf leagues, and fundraisers. An active follower of the New Castle Red Hurricanes, he unfortunately could not appreciate their most recent success as the 2014 state champions. Frank is survived by his son, Daniel Thomas and wife Leanne of New Castle; step-grandchildren, Cody Kirkwood and Cassandra Moore; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by his brothers, Victor M. Thomas and Harry Thomas, and sisters, Violet M. Kuczka and Mary A. Thomas. He is also preceded in death by his two close friends who were also active in credit unions, Joseph Ross and Fred Natale. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A procession will leave the funeral home Wednesday at 9:30am to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am at St. Vitus Church. Interment will take place in St. Vitus Cemetery. The New Castle Area Honor Guard will conduct military rites at the cemetery.
