Theresa A. Macri, formerly of Worthington Avenue, peacefully passed away on the morning of January 18, 2015 surrounded by family in Monroeville, PA, due to complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was 85 years old. Born May 13, 1929 in New Castle, PA, Theresa was amiable, spirited, energetic, feisty, had an entertaining sense of humor, flashing eyes and a charming smile – she smiled and laughed even in her last days. The daughter of the late Pasquale and Maria (Vaturra) Amabile, Theresa graduated from New Castle High School in 1947. She worked as a dietitian assistant at St. Francis Hospital and a plate decorator at Shenango Pottery. She married Eugene P. Macri, the love of her life, on August 20, 1949. She became a homemaker and began raising her family, a son and two daughters. She later worked for several years at Betty’s Bridal Shop on Wilmington Road as a sales clerk and seamstress where she was able to extend her personal knowledge and fashion sense to local customers. Known for her ability to match style with the individual and occasion, she helped select the perfect gown for many a local bride, homecoming and prom queen. She also meticulously sewed seed pearls and added other adornments to the dresses with great care and attention to detail. An active member of St. Vitus Church, Theresa, along with Eugene, worked tirelessly for many years helping to organize the St. Vitus Bazaar. She also was a member of the Christian Mothers and volunteered and donated time in the cafeteria and at other church functions. She enjoyed making crafts, sewing, solving puzzles and murder mysteries, playing cards and bingo, and collecting Hummel figurines; she was a member of the Hummel Collectors’ Club and various neighborhood card clubs. She had a sweet passion for gardening, decorating her house, exercising and walking, and cooking. Her holiday dinners and baked goods are legendary in family lore. She loved music and dancing, especially with her husband, and any occasion could become a gioia di vivere when family and friends were gathered with a little homemade wine and simple foods. She is survived by her son, Eugene P. Macri, Jr., of Waynesboro, PA; her daughter, Rosemary Mendel and husband, Joseph, of Plum Boro, PA; her daughter, Lisa Macri, of Monroeville, PA; and her grandson, Jason R. Mendel, of Apopka, FL. She also is survived by her sisters, Gloria Stanfield of NY, and Margaret Delliquadri of New Castle, as well as numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Theresa was preceded in death by Eugene, her husband of 55 years, in November 2004. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Italy, Tony, Lawrence, Pasquale (Junior), and Carmen Amabile, and two sisters, Grace DiCaprio and Rose Amabile. Visitation will be 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, at the Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home, 941 S. Mill Street. A procession will leave the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 23, for St. Vitus Church where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m, officiated by Father William Siple. Burial will be at Parkside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Tickets for Kids® Charities in memory of Theresa Macri at 139 Freeport Road Pittsburgh, PA 15215.
