Peter J. Carando, 90, of New Castle, passed away unexpectedly the afternoon of October 22, 2014 at Jameson Memorial Hospital. Born on April 25, 1924 in New Bedford, MA, he was the son of the late Joseph and Mercedes Carando. In 1946, he married the former Mary Palmer, and the two spent many wonderful years together until she preceded him in death in 1973. Peter then married the former Mary R. Ferrari, and they spent 37 lovely years together until she preceded him in death in 2011. After 40 years of service, Peter retired from his job in the Maintenance Department for the New Castle Area School District. He also previously served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He belonged to St. Joseph the Worker Church. A meticulous man, Peter loved to work and clean, especially taking pride in shining up his vehicles. He also loved gardening and his animals. Peter is survived by his son, Peter M. Carando and wife Amy Jo Labi-Carando of New Castle; brother, Frank Carando of New Beford, MA; and sister, Margaret Whitaker of Hastings, MN. In addition to his parents and wives, he is preceded in death by his sister, Josephine Mesquita, and brothers, Remo Carando and Joseph Carando. Visitation will be held Friday from 4:00pm to 7:00pm and Saturday from 11:00am to 12:00pm at Ed and Don DeCarbo Funeral Home and Crematory 941 S Mill St. A blessing service will be conducted Saturday at 12:00pm at the funeral home, officiated by Father Frank Almade. Interment will take place at Parkside Cemetery. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Lawrence County Humane Society PO Box 62 New Castle, PA 16103.
